Mics under $300 for metal guitar

I've heard great things about the SM57 (duh) and Sennheiser MD421, but I'd like to know what some other good options are. What about condenser mics? I'm also thinking about one of the lower priced AKG mics.

At the moment I'm using a pretty quiet rig. Just a single speaker solid state combo amp at room volumes. I want a mic that can pick that up pretty well, but I also want the mic to be able to take the power of a loud tube amp into a 4x12 cab. I play death metal stuff most of the time, so I want something I can close mic with.

For that money, I'd get a 57 for close up miking and a cheap large diaphragm condensor to use as a room mic and blend to taste. Then you have the condensor for vocal and acoustic guitar use as well. If vocals will never be done, you might opt for a small diaphragm one instead, but basically, same deal.

the rode NT1A condenser mic is a very good one for its price. I have the NT1000's, and they sound very accurate and capture all the details of my tone. The Nt1's are also great condensers.

I have an e609 and it's good for distorted guitar tones for sure... the sound you hear is what is recorded. For cleans (esp. w/ a kiss of reverb), it's a bit lacking though.
My vote goes for the MD421... can't go wrong with that one!! It's just so versatile... like a (IMO) far superior version of an SM57.

Most mics that are used for Kick drum work well for guitar. So you can also try the AKG D112 and the EV N/D868.
