Midi Controllers

Hi

I'm a newb looking to get into making electronic music and was wondering if synthesizers can be used as Midi controllers? I'm getting Fruity Loops Studio 9 and was going to get a midi controller aswell but was wondering if a synthesizer could do the same job + more?

Thanks

Re: Midi Controllers

Try M-audio keyboards. I have the Axiom and it can be programmed for any although I didn't get around to that yet. The Pro model is preset to work with Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, and Reason functions.

There's also Korg Nano kontrol with/without Nano keyboard.

These are not synths - just controllers. You can use your PC for VSTi & DXi synths.

Re: Midi Controllers

I have the Korg nano set: mixer, drum pad and keyboard. I use them to control Ableton VSTs, they work great!

Re: Midi Controllers

If you already got a synth with midi functionality, you should be able to program it as a controler. If not, as scotte_za said, the nano set is great and I also recommend the Korg microKONTROL.

Re: Midi Controllers

(As people have pointed out before) M-Audio Keyboards are nice. I use the Axiom 61 with a few custom programs. It good as both a MIDI controller (for ProTools - should work with almost any DAW - someone please correct me if I'm wrong) & a synthesizer as well.

The KORG nano controllers are also great.

Re: Midi Controllers

Axiom Pro's are godly as far as midi controllers go, I wouldn't use FL9 TBH, I can't stand it as a DAW. In my opinion you'd be much better off with some dedicated Synth packs/software, and programming them in another DAW. The synths available in Pro Tools are great.

Re: Midi Controllers

M-Audio has 3rd gen models. They rock. and not expensive, with USB socket.

Re: Midi Controllers

You should be able to use the midi out to use the synth as a controller. I can't recommend a specific controller as all I have is a little 25 key akai. FL is a great program, I really like sytrus.
