Midi Output

I just bought Cakewalk Home Studio 2 XL and have a Tascam US-122. For some reason, I can hear audio files that are played, but I can't hear midi files. Right now I'm just using headphones coming out of the US-122 for monitors. When I play the midi files from the software the light "Midi Out" lights up on the US-122 but I can't hear anything. Now I'm new to all this stuff so I might just be an idiot, but I'm not sure if I am supposed to have the midi out going somewhere in order to hear it, or if I should be able to hear it through my headphones? Help!!

Does your soundcard have an on-board MIDI synth? Also check that the MIDI instrument level is turned up in the volume controls.

I have Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth, if thats what you're talking about, but when I plug the US-122 in, the setting for it automatically changes to the US-122 midi out. Any thoughts, I know that I had midi play out of just my normal notebook speakers, but I hear nothing coming out of the headphones jack of the US-122, but I do hear audio coming through.

The "MIDI Out" light means it's going out of the MIDI jacks on the back of the US-122. At least, that's my guess (I have a US-122 as well, but I still haven't figured out MIDI functions yet either).
