New studio project

Hey d0000dez!

Well , im saving up to build a decent home studio for mic'd recording.

Ive done a fair bit of home recording thus far but it has all been direct recording.
This is my myspace www.myspace.com/almightyexcalibur
This is my current recording setup;

Ibanez RG > Korg ax300g > Audigy ZS2 Soundcard (notebook) > Toshiba laptop.
Sonar 7 producer edition , EZDrummer , M-Audio 49key midi keyboard , VST synths.

Ive just upgraded my setup to ;

ADA MP1 3TM / Triaxis , 2:90 , G major , 2x12 rectifier cab.

Ironically , direct recording using this setup sounds worse than a £120 korg effects board , but it was time to go "REAL" recording anyways....

So i need suggestiongs on the following :

USB MIXER - £200ish ($500ish)

MONITOR SPEAKERS - £200ish ($500ish)

MICs - £200ish ($500ish)

-Do i need an amp to power monitors or do they plug in to a wall socket?
-How many mics do i need to mic my 2x12

Now having spent a small fortune on the guitar setup , i realise i may have to buy equally hi end recording gear to capture the quality sounds... So budget busting suggestions are also welcome - This is a longterm project / investment

That should keep you guys busy !

Re: New studio project

Just a thought regarding your monitor speaker purchase - although they're not ideal for all mixing and mastering decisions, a GOOD pair of headphones will likely give better results than an equivalently priced set of 'budget' monitors (and if you're looking at active monitors then yep, these will need their own power feed but no external amp).

A lot of people like the Sennheiser HD600/650 range, but my personal preference is a pair of well run-in AKG K701's.

If you are indeed looking at this as a long-term project, then the investment you make on good headphones will not be wasted (they're always handy for checking your mixes back on, even when you do get some decent near-fields), whereas you'll soon want to be trading up from a set of *Behringer* monitors.

I personally use PMC TB2SA's as my main monitors, but I also have a Blue Sky Media Desk setup, which is damn good for the money...

Re: New studio project

I agree good phones are important, but a decent set of near-field monitors makes the studio IMHO. I've used many - KRK, Advent, Yamaha....but lately I've found the Behringer Truth series are cheap and have a tremendous sweet spot.

Anyway, I personally find it a bit difficult to mix a whole project with headphones as I fatigue to easy.
