orchestral loops from Sonic Foundry has anyone used these?

I'm interested in writing some orchestral pieces and I want to know if any of the 4 orchestral series Acid CDs are any good.

anyone out there have experience with them?

Tell me what you think of them.

Robbie

You may want to look into using a software (or hardware) sampler, and triggering orchestral samples. Acid Pro is loop-based, which means you just trigger and overlay different loops... i don't think it's really what you're looking for to compose orchestral music. The Acid Loops are probably just pre-recorded orchestral phrases that you can loop and sequence in different ways.

Check out Native Instruments' Kontakt, which is a dedicated software sampler, which you can trigger via MIDI. Load it up with a gazillion orchestral samples, and you're rockin'... or not rockin' as the case may be.

I did a Google for "orchestral samples" and found this review by Dave Stewart of numerous sample CDs.

Or grab a Roland xx80 series synth and their two Orchestral boards... or anyone else's for that matter. Less flexible than the sampler route in the long run, but a bit easier to deal with, and not much more expensive in the short run...

FWIW,

The Acid loops are very nice, I've used a few from sample packs off acidplanet.com. But they are loops, and are very difficult to work with if you want more than a loop type piece of music.

Actually, loops can be quite flexible once you get used to using them.

I use them for everything from drums to synth and orchestral loops.

Yeah, they're quite flexible... but you can't compose orcestral music with them. You're limited to the sounds on the loop; they work better as ambient backgrounds for electronica stuff than as the backbones of orchestral music.

I'd suggest Fruity Loops; the sounds aren't GREAT, but you can compose your own melodies on it. The demo is fully functional except you can't save, but you CAN export waves from it, so that an a sequencer (such as SF ACID) and you're set. Otherwise, i'd recommend a top-of-the-line midi program for what you're looking to do.

I used them to write 2 songs for a play and they are very flexible and easy to use. I used the loops from Modern Orchestra 2 and 4. Good stuff........... By the ay if anyone has 1 and 3.......... I have about 35 loop CD's you can chose from to trade for them.

Acid 4.0 is the most versatile ever. VSTi instrument support (including Kontakt and Absynth) ASIO support, odd time signatures etc.

I'm running the demo now, it is absolutely insane!!!
