pro tools digi 002 rack midi connections

hey guys, i have a couple E-mu rack units with sampled sounds / midi production / i would like to use again. i have had them connected via a midi box and used cakewalk but i don't want clutter. i realized last night that the 002 Rack from digidesign has midi ports on it. is it correct to think i could go midi out to the units, then return to the 002 Rack? can i use the 002 rack exclusively for midi controlling? i don't think i have to go 002 Rack to a midi controller then to the samplers....... thanks! if pro tools will do it all that would be beyond perfect!
