Re: Question about preamps and sm57's.
Hey guys. Just bought an SM57 off 3bay for 60$ shipped(pretty good deal) and I know I will need a preamp to accompany it.
not necessarily, but recommended. if your going to get a preamp(and you REALLY should), you should get one as much as your budget can allow...then double it. preamps make the biggest difference in recording. get one really nice preamp/channel strip. if i had to recommend just one, and for "budget" reasons. the univeral audio solo 610. you can run everything through it. it'll make anything sound great. for the extreme budget, 2 preamps come to mind: the focusrite trakmaster pro at $300 and the presonus blue tube. i prefer the focusrite. a have 2 in my rack actually. they were my first good pres. for a channel strip, it is great. basic, but good sounding. adds tons of oomph and dynamic content you can't get with your standard boss pres. the blue tube is more stripped back to just the pres, but you get 2. no compressor or eq, but you will get hotter levels and more harmonic content for sure. if these 2 are still out of your price range(god help you), the presonus tube pre should be the absolute minimum you should get. at $100usd, the tube pre is half of the blue tube. stay away from the art stuff. i have had it, compared to nothing, it's an improvement. compared to what i suggested, it's crap.
However, till the money comes, Will my Digital recorder(Boss BR-600) be able to boost it enough for a decent sound?
let's go with acceptable sound. you will hear something, but the sm-57 isn't the greatest mic in the world, just one of the most versatile dynamic mics. a great preamp like the UA will make it shine...but won't make it a neumann.
I also have a PEavey XXX 212 combo tube amp so I could do some high volume stuff, just not like past 4 ya know? Thanks guys!
the sm-57 will handle the SPLs that the XXX kicks out.
