recent studio trip..

i got my first PAYING session work last week at a local studio (Mirror Image) and it went very well for not having anything really prepared.
a contemporary christian album that needed ( a really BIG kick of adrenalin!) solos and rhythm work on three songs was the job. i was worried about using my 5150 thru a Mesa halfback 2x12 w/ a pedalboard since i've only used it live. i left it on the clean channel and used a Tube Screamer for the leads and chunky rhythms and the engineer was extremely impressed as well as the guy who hired me.
the bottom spkr of the cab was miced w/ an SM57 and an 81 was placed in the center of the room for added depth. i played my Jem7DBK and it was AWESOME!!
i can't wait until the finished product is in my hand as it will add to my "resume". what a really cool experience and the best part is - i didn't pay to go in the studio but got PAID to go in the studio!!

That's cool man.

Yesterday I did about 6 hours of tracking guitars for a new Australian rock band called "Feeding The Addiction". I used a PRS through a Mesa Dual Recto, cranked it and worked from the control room. We did the same mic-ing as you did. I though it sounded great just on 1 track, but when we double tracked the PRS parts and then added a slightly overdriven Strat track to it, it was life-altering. Best studio experience in my career I'd have to say!

i think we all do this for the "goose bumps" you get when something comes together like that. i especially like it when that happens when i'm on stage!
i got to hear the fully mixed tracks yesterday before he sends them off to get the final master and duplication and i was even more impressed at the tone and performance! man, i love this job!!

Man, I'm with you on that. When you start layering really distorted guitars against sightly distorted guitars... "Wall of sound" doesn't do it justice. Of course, it's such a "big" sound that it can be tough to leave room for a lead track, but...

using different gain level guitar tracks makes me think of how Stevie Ray had his live sound set-up. he used a high gain amp (Marshall i believe) and a clean amp (fender) and played thru them at the same time to acheive the "depth" he seemed to have in his sound. i tried it with a clean chorus setting on one amp and a high gain on the other and it was simply AMAZING!! i haven't tried to reproduce the tone in the studio- yet!
