Recording n00B question

This is probably a dumb question but.....

I would like to mike my amp and record some stuff, how do you prevent the mic to pickup backings. How do you record addditional tracks?

Do i need a mixer? I always recorded via a Pod kinda thing, never miked.

headphones for what? than you can either not hear the backing or yourself playing.

Re: Recording n00B question

Depending on your setup, if you have DAW & Amp are in the same room or not... you will use head phones and turn monitors off. Then the mic will not pickup the playback music during your recording of your additional tracks.

You can use the 1 ear head phone method, but usually your amp is crank up for better tone and is loud enough to hear through head phones. You can get opened back head phone too for this purpose.

Also if you have good DAW software, you can play wet along with the mix, so you will hear it through the head phones also

If your amp is in the same room as your monitors.

In reality, most microphones are fairly directional, and if you are playing at a reasonable volume, you'll actually get very little spill from your monitoring through the mic in front of your amp - you can noise gate some of that out, or even manually erase the parts of the track where your guitar isn't playing - worth experimenting with.

The other thing is, if you are happy with the sounds you get out of a Pod, you'll probably have a fair amount of trouble bettering them with a recorded amp - Pod sounds are tweaked to give you the emulated sound of a good amp in a good room recorded with a good mic - that's why they sound so good!

Re: Recording n00B question

easiest home recording method would be to
put your amp in another room, or closet.

Listen to the mix (prerecorded stuff..and live tracks) through your
studio speakers.
