Recording With A Mixer/amplifier????

Hi. I currently record straight from my guitar amp to my computer. My parents have a Peavy XR-600 Mixer/Amplifier Series 400B. Should I use this? And if so how? I've been told that using an amplifer/mixer will harm my computer. If I use the mixer/amplifer can I get a CD quality type of recording. My recordings straight from my amp to my computer don't sound real good. Thanks for your help. Matthew.
