There is stuff out there, just keep looking. My next computer, which I will be building in a few days, will be running only Linux, so I'd be glad to join you in your hunt for recording software (just haven't had the time lately)

Even if you can find recording software, good luck in finding reliable drivers for audio interfaces and such.
Why do you want to do audio work on Linux?

First of all, drivers exist. The ALSA and OSS drivers work awesome-ly, and there are more out there. Second, Linux is an awesome OS. I'm not going to lecture why, I'm sure you can search on google to find that out

Because Windows is his alternative?

Audio usually works out the box on linux at least on the newer linux releases. Now that the 2.6 kernel is out and ALSA is implemented life becomes a bit easier. But thanks for the links!!!
What linux needs at the moment mostly is a data analysis software along Origin.

Red Hat 8 is loading on my older 800Mhz Athlon as I type this. After I get all the Planet CCRMA stuff loaded, we'll see how it goes.
If it goes well, I might build a cheap Athlon box that runs a little stronger so I can begin migrating over to Linux.
Audio was the only remaining factor for me, because with GIMP 2.0 and OpenOffice, there's nothing else left with Microsoft that I need.
Then when I go to replace my laptop, I'll probably get an iBook G4, since I understand you can still get to command line under the GUI.

Re: Recording with Linux
I use Gentoo Linux and strongly recommend it. It's very stable, and continuously updating, so once you install the first time you never have to re-install. Also, it has ebuilds for almost all the audio software you could need, so you don't have to install it by hand.
