Reverse effect on vocals

Does anyone know how they get that backwards sound on vocals like on the opening verses of Fade to Black by Metallica? I hear it alot but I don't know how it's done.

Re: Reverse effect on vocals

1. Reverse the dry vocal (used to involve flipping the tape over before the DAW days)

2. Put a long tail reverb on the reversed track (mix 100% wet)

3. Reverse the reverb track so it now plays foward

4.???

5. Profit
