Shure mic

Hi, I own a shure sm48 mic, and I need some info about it. Can I record instruments with it?? I know it's designed for vocal aplications, but it's the only thing I own. Is it better than the pg57 for guitar and bass recordings?
i'm thinking of buying a pg57 to record instruments, but since i have the sm48 is it worth it?
