Re: Studio Pix....

question for you jemaholic,..

Why did you chose this type of setup ?

I'm currently looking into studio upgrades myself.
And am considering different routes to go.
- computer based ( what I have now )
Lot's of options for editing, lots of overview, but expensive. processor dependant.
- hd recorder based
Somehow appeals to a more musical way of working. cheaper. less flexable

Setup of a HD recorder is cheaper. At least with an analog mixer, however, I work on multiple projects and put some on the shelf regularely. Therefore I'm considering a digital mixer, which makes for a very small step to computer based recording again. Since most of them feature a digital multichannel output. dilemmas dilemmas

Some insight in your choices might give me a fresh view on things.

Thanks in advance !

Hey LCD,
First, this is not the optimal setup. I got a bad taste in my mouth when computer-based recording came out - I got Cubase and had major problems with latency issues. Nothing was syncing.....clock wouldn't work....
More importantly, I found myself staring at a GDamn computer. Mixing is not really a visual sport. Back in the day I used 2" tape machines and read VU meters, so I guess I'm a dinosaur. I'm happy with what I use - this aint Columbia Records.......it's a challenge, but it's a blast. Some guys need a second mortgage to get what they think is the only proper equipment - Go with what works for you.

Re: Studio Pix....

Nice studio
To me kind of looks like a dungeon a bit, with the bricks and low level lighting.

nice rig. love your preamp rack. is that a presonus eureka channel, focusrite isa428, and ua la-610? sick pre's, i want the ua so bad. the new isa828 will be a monster, too. love those krk rp-8s. i got a pair that i use, too. wonder what mics you got. also, i see that you got the auralex up, too. cool stuuf, just looks like you could use some treatments in the corners to kill those standing bass waves, though. the LENRDs or corner fills would help tremendously for that.

Re: Studio Pix....

ACtually, the lenards are close to useless as I have them hiding behind the large panels. I do need better bass treatments but plan on moving to my basement when cash permits the work. The basement has 9' to the bottom of the joists so it should be a better space with some good construction. The Presonus piece is the Central Station monitor controller. While the ISA828 looks very cool, I prefer the 428 as it offers me an easy way to plug in other pre's thru the ISA digital card. FWIW, mics include TLM49, MXL V69, Sennheiser 441, Shure SM7 and some standard stuff beyond that. Yes, I love the LA610 and use it with the TLM49 for vocals, AT2020 for acoustics and direct for bass. I run the tube mic into the ISA428 as well as keyboards and whatever else needs to be recorded. I leave the 8 outputs of the Roland TD10 patched to the 8 line inputs on the 003. Thanks for the kind words.

Re: Studio Pix....

I finally got the pics through from my photographer.

I'm really disappointed, I wasn't there when he took them and they are just pretty shots of the outside or corridors, nothing of the racks, some pictures of the rehearsal rooms.

What a gyp. Here they are at long last anyway, I'll maybe just take 300 myself and pull out the 3 good ones on the computer after.

I'm mastering to a Tascam unit which I really like and I'm using Audiophile bi-amp powered near field monitors for most projects along with a KLH 12" powered sub. I also have KRK's but they don't seem to deliver the best final mixes for me. I've got Senhieser 421's and AKG 414's along with Shure and Audio-Technica 'live' mics. For vocals I use a large diaphram condenser.
Here's a fairly recent project so you can get an idea..

I've posted this song -"Triumphant Return" elsewhere too.

Re: Studio Pix....

It does me heart good to see another Vox ad120 amp. Those are the best combo for under a grand and WAY under-rated. I own 3!

Invest in some Class A pre's.. neve, api, manley etc. and bypass that board
during tracking. Unless you have a lot of $$ you'll have to run some
drums through the board but keep the snare/kick on the good pre's.

Its one thing to run line levels through a mackie level board , but the summing buss's and pre's are terrible.
Make the investment, buy "class A" stuff and its going to hold its value as well...and make an unbelievable difference in quality.

I own'ed neve's an api's for many years and im pretty sure i could sell them
for what i bought them for.

Just an opinion.
after i originally read this post, i actually though that it was pretty snobbish as i own a behringer mx3282 as well. at the time i was "preamping" into my m-audio delta 1010lt's, which i was really proud of. i have since upgraded to presonus converters: a firestudio and 2 digimax d8's. now i just use the behringer just for monitoring the direct outs of the digimax pres. WOW!!! getting rid of the behringer from the input chain has made a phenomenal difference. the clarity and headroom is total elation. class a pre's are the way to go, no turning back!!! i have my good pres(focusrite isa428 and ssl alpha vhd) into the firestudio itself. the DI for instruments has been amazing. that along with line6 gear box, has changed the way i track guitars. total flexibility and killer tones. i hope with the addition of my new mics, the bar will further be raised and the source tracks that i get will be closer to commercial releases.
thanks to rip, albee, and jamie for their gearslutz style approach to us non studio savvy guitar players at jemsite to bring us into a larger mindset.

having great source tracks are awesome and are proving to be way easier to mix. not so many post effects/plug-ins are needed to "fix" those tracks, and that in turn frees up my DAWs resources. having great pres and mics(wish i had a u47...the mojave will get me close), having a treated room, and really good monitors will make recording/mixing way better for all of your projects, personal or professional.
