Studio Pix....

I had to take some shots of some amps for the classifieds and I haven't had any recent studio pix, so I thought I'd share with the latest gear. I'm not sold yet on Cubase or ProTools LE so I'm running a Mackie HD24/96 with an analog Behringer 32in-8out mixing board and a rack of effects including Lexicon and DBX stereo compressors with a dual 32-band EQ. I'm mastering to a Tascam unit which I really like and I'm using Audiophile bi-amp powered near field monitors for most projects along with a KLH 12" powered sub. I also have KRK's but they don't seem to deliver the best final mixes for me. I've got Senhieser 421's and AKG 414's along with Shure and Audio-Technica 'live' mics. For vocals I use a large diaphram condenser.

The room was built to be "tuned". If you look at the keyboard pic- you'll see that the wall is rounded (behind the tree)- no corner for standing waves. The ceiling tiles are Armstrong Theater tiles (hard to get) and they soak up sound. The wall with the window is 24x12 Auralex to soak up sound, so the stone and the floor are bright and reflective, while the ceiling and other wall are dead. The near-field monitors shoot out to the stone wall, diffuse back and die into the auralex and Armstrong tiles for an accurate sound.

I was in a very famous musician's home studio and he had the rounded stone wall - I thought it was a good idea....

Next thing you gotta do man is chuck the behringer board.
If you're actually using the mic pre's on that your sound is definately suffering. (but im sure you already know that)

Invest in some Class A pre's.. neve, api, manley etc. and bypass that board
during tracking. Unless you have a lot of $$ you'll have to run some
drums through the board but keep the snare/kick on the good pre's.

Its one thing to run line levels through a mackie level board , but the summing buss's and pre's are terrible.
Make the investment, buy "class A" stuff and its going to hold its value as well...and make an unbelievable difference in quality.

I own'ed neve's an api's for many years and im pretty sure i could sell them
for what i bought them for.

That Behringer is just to hold me over until I score a Ghost or similar. Those English pre's are awesome and the signal archetecture is pretty elastic.
I started with a Behringer MX9000 with the full meter board, 24 in/outs and 8 sends. It was OK but it blew up and noone can fix them. Irrelevant. Yes, I'll be getting a real board in the near future- but you'd be suprised with what I'm getting right now.....

i wouldnt say a ghost is awesome (far from it) but to each his own.

That set up is ok I guess. Heres my friend and I's pro studio (this is the real deal):

Customized features:

The laptop is positioned just right so I can add flanger to my friends bass tracks without him noticing until I play the mix back.

Lots of cable. There might be a midi cable in there somewhere now.

A mixer so I can add in inappropriate guitar solos that drown out the boring instruments by cranking up my level.

Stacks and stacks of manuals. Gotta have manuals.

I think theres a micro Korg there at the end. We're not sure what it does or where it came from, but it lights up, which we like.
