Upgrade to Pratice room

I have just upgraded my practice/recording room. I built some diffussion devices that will hopefully balance the room better for recording.

Looks nice.
My only suggestion is to pull everything out from the wall at least a foot. (or more, but in your situation
it doesnt looks possible)

The speakers mounted on the walls are going to alter the freq response
you are hearing. (usually unflattering as well).
What you hear isnt going to be what is actually leaving the speakers
so if you compensate for it (IE: decreasing say 250hz)

on tape you've taken too much 250hz away.

in studios the mid range speakers are in the wall but not used for critical listening.
The nearfields are always as far away from reflections as possible.

Thank you for your comments. The monitors are not actually mounted on the wall, they are on stands - a bit hard to tell from the pics. The monitors I use are Yamaha HS50's.There is a compensation switch on the rear of the monitors - they say that, thats what it is for in the brochure, I hope this is true. Do you think this sounds feesable?

If I have 'guest' drummer over to jam/record the usually bring their own cymbals and load up. The yamaha kit is from the eighties and isn't too bad. The B8 Pro's usually get used by me and I am a bit of a hack on the drums. I originally bought the drums so the guy I was playing with at the time only had to bring over cymbals, and not the whole kit thus making pratice easier. The off shoot is that I learnt the drums.....sort of.

Anythings feesable, is it probable that it works? I dont know how they could
"compensate" by one switch for "all" walls. Could be concrete, drywall, plaster, carpet,..etc.

Im sure its just a low mid freq roll off but personally i wouldnt want to
have an EQ switched "in" if i didnt have too.

Put some CD's in of music you know well, try it both ways.

But the most important thing to try is REALLY listen hard to the freqs.
Ignore the music..listen to unpleasant lows (figure out where they are)..
move your ears around, see if the reflections are different sounding
in different spots.

I still say move um away from the wall but if you cant, really learn
the weaknesses of your setup and always keep those freq's in your mind
when you're mixing.

Oh, and since the way the speakers are now..they are almost in the corner of TWO walls..
I would put some some defusion in the corners behind the speakers.

The tough thing about the defusion you made is..its more than likely going
to work fine for mid's to highs..but the lower mid's and lows
arent going to be defused in the same manner..possibly even creating more issues.

Keep that in mind.

I think the best way to do defusion is slats

(think of a book shelf with books all different depths thoughout)

same here! i now own 3 drum kits. it's hard to find drummers who will provide their own stuff as well as more it twice a week!!! i now own 2 acoustic kits and an electric kit. 2 of which are yamaha as well: stage custom and dtxpress 3 and the last being the gigging kit: a ddrum diablo kit. when i bought the stage custom(the first one) it had zildjian zxt titaniums...a whole set, and some cheap pst paistes. i got rid of all of them and now have a complete set of sabian AA's, complete set of sabian XS20, and a set of sabian paragon hats and splash. i ended up getting iron cobra double pedals for all 3 kits as well. a full set of audix mics as well. i guess i went overboard on it.
like you i "got better" at the drums, too. now i just suck at them.

Thank you once again for your comments - they are much appreciated. Your franky looks great. What model RG/Jem have you created it from? It obviously looks like a Jem neck. It would be great to see some more pics.

nice i made a starcaster version of the frank. its like 99% done. i completly re did the wireing, and pickups. i wish my dad hadnt lost the camera, otherwise i woulda posted a million pics and vids already.
Lucky Wolfram, he not only has a place to put his ****, but he knows how to set it up!!!

Im running Pro Tools 7.3 with a Mbox 2. I am about to upgrade to a 003 Rack. I had a lot of fun and learnt a lot doing the Franky - I look forward to seeing some more picks. If you do a search you can see a lot more pics of my franky and the build.
