Re: What mics are you using in your studios?

After doing some quick and dirty comparison, I put the SM57 on the bottom of the list for guitar amps(that's just me. obviously they work great for others). I compared the Cascade DR2, SM-7, SM-57 and MXL 2001 on my guitar amp and the 57 was easily the nastiest sound. The other 3 were all better and are all worthy of checking out. The Cascade is not only my first choice for guitar amps(since I can't afford a Royer), it also works excellent on violin and mandolin and I got great results on sax during may last session. The MXL V69 is a sleeper that more folks should try. Sometimes it is a better choice than the Neumann for certain singers. The old 2001 mics are seeing duty as drum overheads for me and I usually take them with me if I am playing guitar for any live event. The sound man just runs the gain up and rarely needs EQ. The AT2020 needs a good preamp and I run it thru a Focusrite ISA428 with a little RNC cmpression.

SM-7 = Best for male vocals
SM-57 = Cabs
Sennheiser e609 = Variation of tone from the 57
CAD M-177 = Could condenser for Acoustics, female vocals
SM-58 = Good to have around

I'd like to get more but $$$

will be getting: cascade fathead blumlein pair of ribbons next payday(thank god for OT). looking at getting a couple of studio projects mics like the b1 and b3 for extra condensors for either toms/acoustic guitar alternatives. the audio technica at4047 really has peaked my interest, too. if i start saving my pennies, i really want to get a peluso 22-251 or brauner phantom AE.

Re: What mics are you using in your studios?

okay, so i didn't end up with the mxl 604 pair, but got an oktava mk319! cool mic! supposed to sound like a russian u47fet, but considering that i have never used a u47fet...
i really love this mic on acoustic guitars. that and the v67 are going to be my new acoustic guitar go to mics, along with my e614 pair. every mic i have was picked out by massive trolling on gearslutz, tapeop, studio forums, and harmony central. slated to be the "best bang for the buck" mics, they have yet to disappoint,
