Re: What mics are you using in your studios?

Well I love AKG, so we have about every AKG condenser mic in the studio there is. I think they are more bang for the buck compared to Sennheiser.
Then of course some Shures (the usual suspects like SM58s SM57s and betas).
For guitar cabs I like the cheap AKG D22 paired with a good studio condensor mic. The D22 has lots of punch and I consider it lots better than the praised SM57.

Re: What mics are you using in your studios?

Shure sm-57

C 451 for acoustics

Neumann u87 (the daddy, love this mic)

AKG D12 for kick drum

Sennheiser MD421 (rarely used, mainly on drums/overheads)

AKG C414-EB (not used this much)

Rode NTK (not used this much)

A shiitty little mic taken from an old mixing desk which is an awesome room mic...it works great for vintage sounds gives a really warm vibe to the drum track in general. I love it...don't know what it's called, though. In fact, I'm not good with model numbers, I just recognize the mics and identify them that way.

The above mics are not owned by me they belong to my engineer, Gary.

love your list, jamie, really want the sm7, the r121, and the md409. i will probably end up with an sm7 or md421 soon. both would be nice, but...cash flow! although i have looked very hard at the sennheiser e906. i want guitar mic alternatives, that is why i WILL be getting the fatheads. poor mans royer r121.

how are you liking those cascades and mxl's? the 2001 is the royer mod baby. the v69 is the peluso designed mogami. really curious to see what your thoughts are...coupling with what pres and compared to the neumann. i will be picking up the fathead pair in blumlein for drum room/electric gtr recording ala royer r121. so curios what your thought on the cascade are. have you seen the new gomez? looks sick!

not a huge fan of the at2020, tho. pretty good with ac. gtr, but a miss with just about everything else. that's why i'm looking at the studio projects b1(looking at 2 or 3 actually with at least 1 b3, but 2 would be better as i could get blumlein out of it).

Re: What mics are you using in your studios?

Im coming up to the point where I'll be needing a mic... I know the SM57 is good, but how does it compare to the Audix i5? They are like, the same price and both are instrument mics is the only similarities I know, lol.

Re: What mics are you using in your studios?

Well when I when I was going to college to learn about engineer and had access to studios with some expensive gears some of my favourite setups were:

Drums:
SM57 Snare top and Bottom
Senheiser 421s for the Toms
Rhodes NT5s for for the Overheads
Any random condensor or electret for the Hats
AT-25(I think...can't quite remember) for the non-batter side of the Kick(With the non batter head completely removed)
Some other mic right up against the inside of the batter head of the snare but I can't for the life of me remember which. An AKG I think.

Guitar:
SM57
Senheiser 421 paried with an AKG C400b

Put the 3 mics on two different speakers and you can blend to your hearts content. Hot.

I only personally own an SM57 as I'm crazy poor but I'll make it back to that eventually.

My favourite of that list has to be the NT5s though. I'd love to pick up a pair and put them on my cab (5150 combo) with the above pair. So smooth and transparent (to my ears) and them just make high end (10K+ I'm talking just to be clear.) shimmer. Just shimmer. Can make a ****ty B8 Sabian sound like a paiste. Hot.

If you'd like to hear something recorded with these mic setups (although under a time limit as Metal Jesus(the other sound was DI on my home setup) was my final project for school) feel free to check out my Myspace page at(don't worry it is for my guitar lessons and has nothing to due with a band. Although I'm kind of embrassed to let you guys here my play what with the sucking and all):

http://www.myspace.com/danlessons

Hope posting that doesn't violate any forum rules or some such thing. The song is not meant to be taken seriously as you would probably gather after hearing about 30 seconds of it
