What,what,what?!!!!

What do i need for recording a humble home studio. I just want to use it for recording some ideas, you know, some licks, perhaps some bass or keyboard lines, maybe some voice stuff, nothing too fancy. BUT!!! i wanna do it right, i mean, i want good quality, i mean, not like pro recording quality, but i want a good mixing and eq capability, thats why i want to start from scracth, hope you guys can help me out because i dont know a thing about home recording, i mean, absolutely nothing!!! . Please give an advice about every little detail if it's possible, or just the main ideas, i mean, everything from the right computer, to the right mics ,mixer, etc...i dont care so much about the price, because i dont want to put it together right now, so i can purchase parts every once in a while, but as i told you before, i want to put it together right!.
Thank you guys!!!

Re: What,what,what?!!!!

get a decently fast pc with pro tools....the mbox version....should cost you about $500 for the pro tools and mbox unit. other than that, an 8 track roland unit can be had for around $400....takes zip disks. i'm sure they still make those units. have fun and good luck.

Check out this web site. They have nice pre-built systems. http://www.megistron.com/products.asp?id=1 You could at least copy thier ideas if you don't want to buy all at once.

Re: What,what,what?!!!!

For a computer get a Carillon Audio Systems workstation. They're optimized and designed for audio recording. Otherwise, you'll have to struggle with, among other things, Windows assigning the same IRQ:s for multiple devices, which makes your system crash more and/or produces clicks and pops and hangups. You can reconfigure your system and set IRQ:s manually by adjusting your BIOS and reinstalling Windows (the Steinberger site has good instructions for doing that kind of a thing); but in the end of the day, why not bite the bullet, dish out a bit more cash and just record stuff happily ever after? http://www.carillonusa.com

For a soundcard, I suggest you check out Echo Audio Layla 3G. It has two decent mic preamps (w/switchable phantom power), and a ****load of ins & outs. http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/PCI/Layla3G/index.php

I'd stay away from USB things. They're ok for small projects but can't match the speed of PCI cards. If you must go mobile go Firewire.

A "portastudio" type of a recorder gives you an easy and stable recording environment but lacks the editing possibilities a computer-based thingie provides.

Carillons are stupidly overpriced, for what you get. You can have any local shop build something just as fast or faster, and quiet, for less money.

I agree with the Echo comment though.

Re: What,what,what?!!!!

A cheap solution would be V-AMP 2, a PC with Linux and/or Windows and Audacity. It's good if the soundcard has a midi port for controling the V-AMP 2 or plugin in a midi keyboard.
