What's a mixer?
What is it?
And speaking of the such, what else will I need to construct a home studio?
I got a decent sound card and can get pretty much any software I need pirated. So hardware is the only other stuff I need to worry about.

A mixer is something that takes multiple signals and 'mixes' them to one source. For example, if you have one amp and one set of speakers hooked up to your PC and want to plug a guitar, a keyboard, and a microphone into that PC, you'll need a mixer.
Considering the first thing my friend said when he saw me with a rather small personal studio mixer was "nice Radio Shack 50 in 1 science kit!!", they look pretty complicated, but don't worry, its a very simple premise.
Check out
www.mackie.com
for some great mixers to start with.

Hey guys.
I want to start writing songs. What's a Chorus? I know a lot of songs, so i can use other peple's chords, but i heard someplace that i'll need a chorus.
Also, what's a riff? Where can I get one?

Oh oh! I need a bridge...but I'm not sure what for.
What's a song need with a bridge, it's not like it's going to cross something?

I think what Kenny and I are saying is that most people who have the
brain cells enough to own a computer, get themselves on the internet
(even with AOL), and find a fine web board such as Jemsite, should
probably have researched the basics of studio recording
ON THE INTERNET!!
Or hell, at least looked it up in the library for those that are digitally
impared.
Here is what I got from Google when inputting:
Basics of Studio Recording
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&a...udio+recording
Some fine links in there including some specifics on recording guitars.

Funny LR...i was just coming to give a 'serious' answer too - conscience got me too.
Since you already gave the link, I'll just go on to say, a mixer is the thingy with all the knobs and sliders and buttons on it (I've even seen some with lights!). Usually, you see a bearded guy with a cigarette in a club standing behind it while the band is on, usually looking like he cares too much, but sounding like he doesn't care nearly enough near it.
Or if you go into a recording studio, you
might
see one too.
Note: It's NOT the same as a 'mixer' that you'd use for baking - Do NOT attempt to plug one of those into your computer.
Stay tuned for tomorrow's highly educational & motivational class, "What is a Fretboard"...from the people that brought you the answers to "Is the
bridge pickup
the one next to the tremolo?" and many many more.

ok I admit, that wasn't funny.
Davester's right; there's no such thing as a stupid question. I feel that people should try and answer a stupid question themselves by first exploring the internet a bit to find the answer.
Somebody posted on a recording forum the other day what is firewire. Jeez, 2 minutes (not even that) will find the answer.

Almost. Mixers allow you to send multiple
source
signals to multiple destinations by using your busses or Aux sends. These destinations can be your soundcard input, MDM or DAT machine etc.
Remember Sources feed destinations (Outputs feed inputs) so saying that a mixer 'mixes' them to one source is incorrect.
BTW, I am a little ashamed of you smarty pants flammers. No question is stupid. Somebody posted a question where he/she knew they could get a quick answer. Whats the harm done in that?
I once posted here asking who started Jemsite and why...now that was a silly question
Chill out peeps
