Windows Updates causing latency in DAW software!!

Ok, so I connected my DAW to the internet and I hadn't turned off Automatic Updates, so some of the Windows Updates got installed without me knowing. When I re-opened SONAR 8.5 Studio, all of a sudden all of my tracks had serious popping, clicking, and latency issues on both recording and playback. After extensive troubleshooting, I traced the problem to an update to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package. I rolled back this package to version that is pre-version 9.0 (the package is mis-labeled). A good version for x86 can be found at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

I've found that this update affects a number of products including Reaper, Riffworks T4, SONAR Home Studio 7 XL, Audacity, and Podifier. However, since most DAW software leverages the low level C++ libraries, I have a guess that other software may be affected as well. If you software freaks out like this, download the earlier version and keep it on you computer in case it gets inadvertently updated in the future.

Cheers,

Race

There's no reason why you should be applying updates to a DAW in the first place.

Hence, "Inadvertent" -- which I guess translates into English as, "Too lazy to go get the laptop..."

Re: Windows Updates causing latency in DAW software!!

it's funny some audio programs will work best with xp sp 2. which is what i am still running with my DAW. atm, i feel no reason to upgrade as my recording rig is a hybrid itb/otb. my DAW is a glorified tape machine, reverb unit, and automation. i do most of my eq and compression otb.
windows updates can make daw's go flaky and so can various instances of drivers. i know that my presonus firestudio 2626 was flaky for a little over a year, but now it is solid as a rock.

disable windows updates or get yourself a linux machine its that simple lol i have a copy of xp with internet and updates disabled, i strictly use it for music and i got no latency have you tried setting up a second O.S. just for audio.

Re: Windows Updates causing latency in DAW software!!

that's right, i would definately setup a 2nd machine JUST for recording and NOTHING ELSE. no auto updates, and no software except the OS and whatever recording software and plug-ins you want. in fact, i disable the nic when recording....as i have seen that cause some issues. i actually purchased a mac mini just for use with pro tools and couldn't be happier. the OS is so much better for all apps, especially recording audio
