1 Humbucker Choice

Hey everyone, I am writing this, asking for advice from you guys. I am going to be acquiring shortly a single humbucker guitar, with only a volume knob adjustment...straight rock n roll here!! My question is, what would be a good choice humbucker? I aspire to play shred type stuff, Vinnie Moore, Tony McAlpine, as well as I am obviously into Vai, Satriani stuff. So, I am hoping for something that will be "cleanish" when played at fast speeds, obviously I would be receiving plenty of the dirt from my preamp. I am thinking PAF pro...but?? I'm really not sure, I've only ever played a PAF pro, and Evolution...I really like the Evolution, but I prefer to have it split with the single coil in my 770dx. I won't have that option with this guitar. So, if you guys could shed some light on what you think would be a good choice, i would definitely consider your input for purchasing the pickup. Thanks guys, you always have great stuff to say. Have an awesome day!!

I think the FRED responds really well to the volume control and I think it has a great "shred" tone to it. It's less agressive than the Evo but it still cuts nicely.

I'd also suggest the DiMarzio D-Activator or the Duncan Jb. They are both able to cover alot of ground, clean up well with the volume knob and sound nice coil split.

Paf Pro or Fred would be nice too though.

Rock on!

1 pickup, 1 volume?

DiMarzio PAF Pro for a very clear mid/high output.
DiMarzio Evo 2 or Seymour Duncan JB for high output and lots of overtones and dynamics.

Let me suggest a push/pull pot and do a series/paralell wiring!

A pickup with the most insane balance and overtones. It has a lot of neck and bridge qualities, great note articulation/separation so it sounds great for everything from alternate picking, metal to sweeping........... The bareknuckle Cold Sweat humbucker....... i really haven't heard better when it comes to trying to get a bridge pickup to do everything technique wise for "shred".

Re: 1 Humbucker Choice

hmmmm
a Tone Zone is always my choice for the bridge...
but...
in this case and if you are running a lot of gain
a Norton, or maybe a fred or PAF pro in reverse order of output TZ being the hottest and Ppro the least

Right now I have an single F1 with an alnico5 magnet in a 550r and its a great combo too

Because their favourite artists use them and it help ou sound like your heroes...

If I want to sound like Steve Vai, the easiest way for me to do this is to use a JEM, with Evos.

granted, that's true, but i think people should be encouraged to try and develop their own tone, not just sound as much like somebody else as they can.
