1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

Hey hey, about to lay down an order for this set of pickups.

What I'd like are some wirring suggestions.

I'm considering JS Wiring I.e

3 WAY, with a High pass and a Coil Tap

Or what I *Believe" to be JP,

3 Way with the 2nd position being Outer Bridge and Inner Neck coils together.

Any thoughts? Thanks a bunch.

Also, any Evaluations from people using this pickup combo would be greatly apprechiated, thanks

Spikey

I dunno about the Blaze Custom but!!!

The Blaze neck in bridge for a 7 sounds great to me. :P

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

I got the same combo on my RG1527, and I gotta say that it is the best I have had so far. the AN7 is a given but the BC7 is overall best rhythm pickup in my opinion and my set up, specially if you are looking for that JP sound. I used his wiring set up also but I have a extra switch that makes either both Hummers on at the same time and then split them like JP's. If I have time tonight I will record a sample and post it.

I would love one if you don't mind, and can you go into that wiring again?

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

i have that combo in one of my rg7620s. man, to be honest with you, if your rg1527 is stock, it already should have a high pass capacitor on the volume pot. if it is stock, you should have a 5 way for the 2 hums. this is ibanez's special 5 switching which will give you EXACTLY the tones you are looking for.

1: series neck hum
2: neck single or neck hum in parallel(depending on how you wire it. neck single for me)
3: both series hums in parallel
4: both hums coil tapped, in parallel(the petrucci clean tone)
5. series bridge hum

to make a long story short, ibanez has already done the work for you. just drop the pickups in and wire them up normal.

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

Hey Spike, I'm sorry I was not able to post it last night. I gotta record the samples from scratch and upload them to my website. I had trouble with FTP last night. anyways Rty13 is right the JP sound is one the 5-way but the chances of me hitting the spot when I'm flipping the switch is small. so I replaced my 5-way with a slotted 3-way

1 Position: Full Bridge
2 Position: Full Bridge and neck
3 Position: Full Neck

now I have a extra switch to split the coil on any of this 3 position. so this set up is kinda like a combination between JP's and Satch. when I flip the coil switch it gives me this

1 position: Inside Bridge Coil
2 position: Inside Bridge and Inside Neck Coil
3 position: Inside Neck Coil

and That gives me all the sounds that I need. I'll post the clips ASAP

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

Here is the link. Don't pay attention to the playing...lol

www.carruyo.com/test.mp3

First I play rhythm, then Lead with a wah pedal with the bridge p/u then lead with the neck. you can really hear the difference when I switch. I use a BOSS GT-3 so these sounds are very basic. then some clean with the JP sound...hope this helps. I'm very happy with this combo.

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

I kind of understand the preference for the 3-way over the 5-way.. its supposed to be faster (switching) and less prone to landing on a wrong position.

However, do note, if you use a 3-way you NEED another switch to split the hums like what Ibycan7 has said, and thats a VERY important factor in making the switch as convient/foolproof as possible. Which is your aim I believe?

You need a switch, either a 2-way DPDT Mini toggle or a Push pull pot.

And the mini toggle is the fastest, most foolproof method of toggling the coil split.

So you might need to drill another hole or replace your tone pot with it.

The other thing you can consider, is to go all out for the JPM style wiring/switcing. But you need to get a 4PDT 3-way toggle and well, get rid of the current 5-way blade, drill another hole for the 4PDT.

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

I actually forgot to say that I do have the Push/Pull on my tone knob so I didn't have to drill another hole on my guitar. I thought about doing the full JP set up but I would hate to do another hole in the guitar unless I do a pickguard to cover the empty holes. JP set up only gives 3 sounds instead of 6 that I can get but it is up to you....

I believe I'll go for something around the 3 way blade and the push pull tone.

Thanks, I'll post up some pics / sounds, when it's all done

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

Hey, I'm using my standard MG50DFX, which obviously explains a lot to why it sounds so-so lol, but I've had some success in raising the pickup hights and altering my mids

I use a quite middy sound anyway

So my settings are about 4/5 on gain, 7 on bass, 5/6 on mid, 4/5 on top

it's sounding tighter now

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

Consider having less mids... the BC is very mid heavy so it does not lend itself to articulate rhythm but has great fat tone for leads.

Also, drop the bass... A 7 string has that low B which is naturally very bassy, you can afford less bass.

Re: 1527 - Blaze Custom / Air Norton

It is better if you try to match the voicing of the amp, Marshall is very middy so back off the mid and you can probably leave the Bass and the Treble about the same level. that should give you a balanced sound. by lowering the mids it should give you a tighter rhythm. Glad you are digging it. In the next couple of weeks I'm going to try the new D-sonic 7 to see how different it is from the BC7
