a disturbing V-series pickup story (made me think!)

we did a funny "blind" test recently, that involved a rather sesoned player (dude about 40 yrs old), and two gibson les pauls. one was a 90s all stock Standard, the other one was LP Studio. the owner of the latter was waiting for new pickups, so he had two Ibanez V-series hums (off a Prestige) in that Studio as a temporary replacement (he sold stock Gibsons).

so, the dude was given the two guitars, and was asked to paly and evaluate them; we taped the V-series logo off, and all he knew was that there were just two Les Pauls. being a LP user, he liked both, BUT:

he asked: "that Studio is soo "take me to the 60s", very cool; is it the newer model LP with vintage-style pickups? it chimes like a mofo"

that was the one with V p-ups.

Re: a disturbing V-series pickup story (made me think!)

Doesn't really surprise me. While I can't really testify with 100% confidence on the newer Ibanez stuff, as I don't really care for any of it......IMO the V series pups from the old square heel 500 and 700 series RG's are some of the best stock pups ever.

It always baffles me when I see an oldschool 550 with replacement pickups in it. To me that just devalues it.

yes, despite being very subjective, it proves that people tend to listen with their eyes a lot.
