Alnico Pickup for Prog Style

I'm building a guitar for a guy who is into fast Dream Theater, shred, type stuff. He want's a more Paf tone to back his Evo equipped guitar. What pickup has a good pick response for like fast alternate picking type stuff.
it will go in the bridge of his RG1570.

We've played some Paf style pups that seem to lack the ability to keep up with the picking if that makes any sense? Maybe flabby is the term? The Evo never has this problem but he would like a bit warmer tone.

well i'd suggest the d-sonic with the bar to the bridge , or steve's special but it would really depend on what amp he has and finding a pickup that would work with the amp to help get the tone he wants rather then against .

The Steve's special is still a bit thin on the high end, not Paf-ish. How about a Breed?

Paf pro is good enough for alternate picking if you ask me, I've got a decent alternate picking technique and it sound good to me at least, here's a solo clip I've done with both paf pro in the neck and in the bridge

Re: Alnico Pickup for Prog Style

IMO most Dimarzios are soft and late on the attack, especially the Airbuckers. I would recommend the Duncan Custom 5. It's got a nice mild scoop, reminiscent of the way the Steve's Special cuts through the mix. But it will not sound thin like the Steve's Special can. Especially if he wants more low end than the Evos.

The step-brother to the Custom 5 is the Duncan Full Shred. That would absolutely KILL for what you're asking to do. It's basically the same design but with short allen poles on both sides. The short allen poles tighten and focus the attack.

Re: Alnico Pickup for Prog Style

I have Air Zone in the bridge and Breed on the neck. I would say that AZ is very very good if you want a bit fatter and stronger PAF tone but still being REALLY defined no matter how much distorsion you put on it. On picking is really accurate, has nice smoothness to it and its about the best I heard for hard rockish chords(Smoke on the water, whitesnake stuff). Breed on neck is nice for smooth picking stuff, not so good for ryhtm, but for fast picking on bridge I recommend Air Zone, especially cause it is also great for ryhtm stuff. Breed is defined but AZ is like very very defined for picking(it has nice harmonic feel when playing a fast passage, and you can still hear every note clearly) and chord both(you can strum a 5 note chord on heavy distorsion and still hear the chord... distorted,heavy,warm.. but still a chord..not a hum)

Down to a Norton or a Breed in the bridge. More input?

I'm liking the Breed set, both neck and bridge.

Breed is ok but there is a mid low hump "the 50`s tone"

Re: Alnico Pickup for Prog Style

I like the D-sonic......bar toward neck gets you Tone Zone -ish flavor
bar towards bridge smooths everything out abit
Air Norton with the adjustable pole pieces away from the neck gives you PAF Pro-ish tone, the other way gives you a warm hollow tone
