Re: AN Vs. PAF Pro

If you don't want a bassy sound, then I would suggest going with something like a PAF Pro or a PAF Joe. Personally, I rather like that bassy sound in the neck pickup so I think the Air Norton would be perfect for me.

Re: AN Vs. PAF Pro

Air Norton is not loud enough to be paired with a higher output pickup (375 mv or higher). it also lacks bass in my opinion. The PAF pro kicks harder than the air norton and the split sounds are better than on the air norton.

the air norton lacks bass? thats a bold statement. i own both and the AN is way more bassy that the paf pro. i wouldn't even say the paf pro kicks harder, it has slightly more output. its a bit more even than the AN, but the AN is meant to be more fat. i actually prefer the split AN versus the split paf pro. the AN is like an overwound single coil-texas special style. the paf pro is a little more whiny, not a bad thing, all in what your looking for.

Actually right after I posted that, I realized the Air norton is actually very bassy. yet for some reason, the sound of the AN makes me feel empty in the lower torso area hehehe, lacks some bass-kick. I think it's due to that air bucker technology or something but i find it hard to play legato stuff with the air norton. notes don't jump out as much as with a PAF pro. I never hear petrucci do long legato lines. he always uses his pick to play fast, and that's what the air norton is great fo r i think. just my opinion.

Re: AN Vs. PAF Pro

I was recording a solo today...i coudln't decide whether to use my Mahogany JC w/ AN of my Basswood Jem w/ PAF Pro.

I was trying to get a slightly distorted Fender Twin kinda sound. Neither one of them turned me on, but i neded up using the JC/AN. Granted, i'm using a Peavey Amp, but the amp usually does well on the higher gain stuff...this was low gain.

I clipped them out of the song and here they are if you want to take a listen...I think i never got a good take with the Jem, so it might be a little not good.

Each clip is under 1 MB

Re: AN Vs. PAF Pro

how would you guys compare those 2 pups to the emg85 as far as the eq curve goes?

btw, since noone said anything yet: great clips kenny. I prefer the paf Pro over the AN in those clips

I agree on both points.

The clips reflect my own experience with those two pickups (PAF Pro in a basswood Jem and AN in an alder Soloist): the PAF Pro has a brighter, clear sound. The AN is mushy by comparison, IMO.

They both sound good, I think. I just prefer a brighter neck pickup sound.

Re: AN Vs. PAF Pro

In basswood, I found the AN to be nice and open and better for clean sounds, also it is nice and smooth for those overdriven solos and better at chords in the neck position. The lower output takes some of the mud out of the mix.

I'll post my thoughts on the Air Norton once I install it later this week in my RG550.

i'm not trying to exactly take Vai's tone, it was just an example. I just love that virtuoso smooth type lead sound. Think along the lines of Vai "for the love of god" or Petrucci's Rock disipline tone

i was pleasantly surprised when i put my Tone Zone in, that it had a killer lead tone

I just got done mixing the song if anybody's interested. I used the AN solo, but EQ'd it a LOT differently in the mix than in the one i posted here. ibanezcollector may not be the only one who prefers the AN once they hear it in context and mixed.

PS: the cleans all came from the same J-Custom - either AN or AN/Blue Velvet split.

Re: AN Vs. PAF Pro

make sure you listen to the re-EQ'd AN in the mix on the other thread before you judge.
