Anyone bypass the tone knob?
My RG pickguard has an extra hole in it where someone once had a
toggle switch
. Right now I have a peice of electrical tape over it but I'm thinking of putting in a toggle switch that will bypass the tone pot. Will it sound any different without the tone pot? A little more high end maybe?

Re: Anyone bypass the tone knob?
I had a similar situation (where the owner had drilled an extra hole). I at first had a toggle switch for coil taps, I but I found out that I liked the normal/stock wiring of the 5 way switch alot better. Well, in that extra hole I added an extra tone pot. Now, both leads from each pickups have their own dedicated tone control. This is similar to a Strat's wiring, but not quite the same. (I just run the hot leads directly into the tone and then out into the five way. From there on, it's a normal RG550 wiring).
This makes it very easy for me to tame my X2N without having to constantly fiddle with the tone control everytime I switch pickups.
To me, it makes the guitar look more "complete". Here's a pic too (I really need to polish my guitars...

Tone knobs are definitely not useless, especially if you play clean sometimes or have an very shrill pickup like the X2N. If I turn my tone to about 3 on my
Air Norton
, I can get a pretty good jazz tone.
Plus, it's always good to be able to adjust your pickups accordingly to various amps, etc.
Eric Johnson
's a master at working tone controls.

Re: Anyone bypass the tone knob?
Hey that looks prety good. I do use the tone knobs, but I'm wondering lately if I would get just a tiny bit more bite by bypassing it. Then I have an excuse to use the extra hole. I would install a black micro switch so it would be hardly noticeble.

Re: Anyone bypass the tone knob?
You can make a no-load tone pot by taking it apart and gently scraping away some of the carbon track.
This way, when it is wide open, it does not affect the circuit--just like have no tone pot at all.

Re: Anyone bypass the tone knob?
Tone knobs are a must! I use mine to adjust my tone on all my guitars. It gives me more variety and makes a guitar more versatile.
