Re: Anyone here got any old EVH recipe's?

Check out the VH Tips section on the link below.

Its a great site, shame all the VH song tabs and videos are gone

eddie's guitar in the early days was an ash body and a maple neck. don't use alder, eddie hated the sound of alder. a seymour duncan 59' for to get the tone in the 5150 days, or a seymour seth lover pickup for the roth era tone. a guitar that's stock, that sounds really close to ed's sound is this one..

fender lite ash stratocaster. it has a duncan pickup but it's a single coil. sounds close though.

Strings are only $3-$4, hardly worth the time to try boiling them. I seriously doubt it will do anything for the tone unless they are totally gunked, then you might as well change them anyway.

Have you seen Spinal Tap? When they are talking about playing harmonicas in the "old days"? They say they would pull out the reeds and soak them in vinegar, then Rob Reiner asks them why, they say, "I don't know, it's just what we did". Pretty much the same thing for boiling strings, that's what they were spoofing.

$0.02

Boiling the strings had nothing to do with the tone. He boiled them to stretch them out faster. I've got tons of interviews here where he talks about it. He used to change his strings daily (and I guess he still does).

If you try it yourself, make sure you dry them properly (in the sun) otherwise they will rust extremely fast.

yeah i would bet under that pickgaurd it has a universal route though
all i would have to do is get another guard with a HH or SSH cutout
and slap a 59 or a duncan EVH in it

Buy one of those first version ZOOM 505 pedals and then just go to the 505 patch web site and use one of the VH patches they have. You can pick up a 505 these these days for about $25 and under. BTW, they make great late night headphone amps too!

Remember that Eddie lied about a bunch of stuff in the old days to throw people off for whatever reason. This string boiling sounds like something he made up.

Anyone here got any old EVH recipe's?

When I first saw this, I did not think that there would actually be cooking involved.

Regardless, boiled string soup doesn't sound very tasty.

despite the initials the EVH isn't an Eddie Van Halen pickups it stands for Evenly Voiced Harmonics. Just as the JB doesn't stand for Jeff Beck it stands for Jazzy/Bluesy.
