I stayed away from them for a long time until I got one in an RG, and I really like it. I think a good way to describe it is that when most manufacturers refer to going a step farther than PAF, they mean more winds, a beefier sound, fatter mids, etc. The PafPro is more alive sounding, and has more presence. So I guess if the PAF was a regular old motorcycle, then most "hotter" PAF's are trying to be Fatboys, while the PafPro is like a japanese racer. It takes the alternate approach to what powerful is. The result is greater attack, more string sensitivity, and back in the days that Vai was going through multiple digital rack units, it had the presence to still cut through some of that signal degradation. A good and versatile choice, unless you are after Holdsworth/Keaggy type smoothness, or a heavier, muddier metal sound.

hey frank that was a great way to describe the pro!
I hear what you are saying,i love the old PAF's but they lack power and balls, but i also do not care for the overly hot pickups out there,so this PRO may be just what i want? A paf with a twist?

The original Jems had a
PAF Pro
in both neck and bridge positions.
I recently bought a PAF Pro for the neck, and an Evo for the bridge on my 520.
I like the sound of the Evo, but it's a little hotter than I really like a pickup to be and I may swap it out for another PAF Pro.
For my taste, I think the PAF Pro is the nicest all around pickup ever made.
It's powerful, but not overly so, it's sweet when you want it to be, ballsy when you want it to be, clear and clean when needed . . . so on, so forth . . . there isn't much you CAN'T do with them.

I have two paf pro's on my Jem 777dy and one in the neck of my Js1000. My only thing I don't like about it is in the
bridge position
for lead I find it a tad too trebly. I think this is what Satriani addresed introducing the fred which is a paf pro with a little more mid range and a tad more output. Saying that though I'm comparing a
maple fretboard
(JEM777DY) to a rosewood one(JS1000). Best overall neck pickup though in my opinion.

I also used the PAF Pro in my JEM777DY. Sounds really nice. Very clear and defined. With my jmp-1 I missed a little output and mass, so I replaced it with a
Tone Zone
.. but this is to much, not very sensitive and a little to much low mids I think.
I would recommend you to listen to tracks of
David Lee Roth
's albums with Steve Vai: Skyscraper for example... it's a perfect example of the PAF Pro sound in the bridge!!!
If you have a higher gain amp... don't bother about the output.

I dont' think it will do it too good. Better one of the SD Customs to get that tone.
