Best pickups for extreme metal in a RG1570?
Sorry for yet another pickup thread
Okay, so I've pretty much been going insane trying to figure out what pickups to put into my new RG1570. Everytime I look around there is another option staring me in the face. It seems like many people here are looking for the Vai tone. I play mostly extreme and
death metal
(Suffocation, Behemoth, Necrophagist) with other newer metal styles (Mastodon, Lamb of God). Can anyone point me in a good direction? I need the pickups to handle alot of gain but still retain definition. I have a guitar with EMGs so I'd like to go a different route with this guitar. Something a little more "alive" sounding. I'm using a PODxt direct for recording so that's what I'm working with for sound. Thanks everyone.
Jeremy

Barenuckle pickups, definitely. Get Ceramic Warpigs, Miracle Mans, Nailbombs, or Painkillers. You will NOT be disappointed. They will kick EMGs and Dimarzios to the curb in both the output and definition department.

You beat me to the post! Bare Knuckle's are superb, and "alive" is an excellent description of their sound. They will also take the time to answer your emails to help you work out what to go for.

For what they cost they better make any color you want.

If you want your guitar to be more ALIVE sounding, try the 18V mod for the EMG's. I generally recommend it to all the metal bands I do
guitar tech
work for. NO ONE has complained and it really makes your EMG's sound less sterile.

+1 on that. 18 V mod is a world of difference.

They do black, white, or cream.
Dull.
I'll buy some Q-Tuner High Z pickups instead.

I don't but I recently did the mod on two vintage 70's Les Pauls for a client and initially only did one so we could A/B the differences and honestly, testing the 9v system after the 18v system it sounded like a whole lot was missing. It was almost like the bass dissapeared going back to the 9v system.
I believe the best analogy to describe the sound difference is that the 9v sounds like there are a bunch of pillows in front of your cab. Running the EMG's at 18v seems to remove the pillows allowing for more dynamics for a fully, punchier sound... a LOT more alive sounding than the stock 9V's.
The rig I tested this on was a stock 80's JCM800 100w head into a JCM800 cab with a SD-1 in front of the head. Both guitars were 70's
Gibson Les Pauls
(
maple necks
& pancake bodies).

Man, those Bareknuckles are expensive! I think they're a bit out of my price range right now, especially since I just bought the guitar last week.
