Breed Neck vs Paf Pro

So I'm still torn between these two pickups to go in a 550DX which is down-tuned to C. I'm assured that the bridge will be a D-Sonic [bar in bridge position] to play metal/shred + clean tones. To contrast that tone, I want a smooth yet harmonically rich lead tone with enough bite for the neck for clean/distortion. I was initially going for an Air Norton but I'm not sure how well it picks up lower notes.
I've played a Breed in a 7DBK and Paf Pro in a 3120 [both standard tuned] in the past but need opinions for either pickups in a maple neck/basswood body tuned to C.

the Air Norton will probably be the best bet.

It's fat and smooth but it retains clarity and bite and has lots of harmonics.

Breed neck. Vai uses a BRMR (with Breeds) live for Bad Horsie, which is in Drop-C, and I think it sounds effing awesome. Clear and defined yet growling.

Re: Breed Neck vs Paf Pro

And how well does it work with the lower strings? Does it get muddy? How good is the D-Sonic with the drop c tuning? I have an RG320 (basswood/maple/rosewood) with drop c tuning and I'm thinking about changing pickups...so...please share as many info as you can!!! Thanks!

Re: Breed Neck vs Paf Pro

well, i'll give ya a heads up review even though its been about 24hours since i installed it... btw, they're down-tuned to standard C, not dropped C
In distortion, The Breed Neck sings... it does pinch harmonics and fast scale runs quite well. Clean is very... Hi-Fi and 3D... large overtones, not necessarily bright but clear. I went with the Breed Neck cause I was aiming for a lead guitar tone similar to Winds [Norway]. If you're familiar with early Arcturus, that's THE lead guitar tone that's always been in my head and now it's on my RG550!

The D-Sonic, is an odd beast. Just like previous threads have said, it's like a Tone Zone and a Steve's Special in one pickup [never tried an SS though]. I'm more familiar with a TZ and the D-Sonic has a similar bass response but it has more bite and attitude in the mids. Clean mode is where everything changes; it doesn't distort like an Evo and it produces "pretty" clean passages. It's responsive to pick attack and becomes a slightly different beast as you turn the gain up. Its a pickup you'd never expect to sound good in both scenarios. DiMarzio definitely hit the mark with this one. I also got this pickup cause I saw the main guitarist for Katatonia had 'em on his signature Mayones.

Re: Breed Neck vs Paf Pro

I am pulling a breed out right now....

No matter what, I just could not get a decent sound (to me) out of it.
