Breed pickups...

I've heard alot of bad press on them.
Many people have been saying that they're nothing compared to EVO's so really, what is your opinion on it?

I'm tempted to get a JEM7DBK (Or whatever it's called - it has a textured black finish. I'm a bit tired so i'm sorry if i got the name wrong ), but i found that they have Breed pickups.

Are the breed pickups good, and if so how? Are there any sound bites on them? I'm thinking of getting one, putting a vine on the fretboard and sticking EVO's in.

Anyways, if you've got info, don't be shy

Re: Breed pickups...

Yeah, but the soundbites for the Breed are just Steve's work.

I can listen to Vai anytime
I need to hear some live stuff or something i guess.

Re: Breed pickups...

I have a BRMR w/BREEDs and I love them. Everybody usaully gushes about the EVO's, but I'm not impressed. I have a VWH w/EVO's and I don't like them as much as I like the breeds.

Put it this way, I'm currently recording.. My BRMR has seen more recording time than my VWH does simply because I love the tone I get from it and it's equipped w/BREEDs. I play shred, rock/blues, and Metal..... and the BREEDS work just fine for me.

Re: Breed pickups...

I got a Jem7dbk and the breeds are amasing. They are different than the evos but all are good, there is no bad pickups here , its just different tone and depends what you are looking for.
The breeds got lot of midrange and very dynamic. I personaly cant play anything else.
You can hear my demo album by clicking on the link below. Its all done on the breeds.

I don't know where you are hearing your info Chud, but I've been hearing a lot of people prefer Breeds to Evos lately from a lot of people on these forums!

Re: Breed pickups...

I put it all down to personal preference. The Evo's in my opinion, have a far more distinctive sound, but whether it's a sound YOU want is another matter.

The Breeds are great pickups, well suited for rock music, they just don't sound as much like Steve Vai's signature tone as the Evo's do.

My advice would be, that if you love Steve's S+R or ALS tone, you need the Evo's, if you want to sound a less like Steve, go for the Breeds.

Re: Breed pickups...

In my opinion the Breeds should be the new bench-mark in humbucking sound. If i could sum them up in two words they would be "predictable" and "smooth".

If you don't expect bizarre and outlandish peaks in a pickup to give your guitar character or attitude, you can't go wrong with these. True, if you're on the "vai live sound" boat, you may want to steer clear.

Re: Breed pickups...

I've had my JEM7D for a month now and I am happy with the Breed's. They have a smoothe tone, very smooth. My first impression though wasn't really all that. I wasn't quite happy but a bit of tweeking on the settings and I'm getting it how I like it now.

I used to have a JS100 with Tone Zone's in it and I do miss them, the TZ's a really sharp cutting and clear sound. They used to give a lot of punch. All depends on what you want really.

Re: Breed pickups...

I did a little breed demo a few months back for folks here on the forum.

it's HERE

Hope this helps.
~Kenny

PS: I prefer the Evos to the Breeds, but that's just my opinion.

Re: Breed pickups...

I like the Breeds better, they are warmer and rounder than Evos. Much better for rhythm, IMHO, and I like their solo tone too, it's fuller than Evos.

Re: Breed pickups...

I put a Breed in the neck of my RG750VP along with a MegaDrive in the bridge, and i prefer the tone of the Breed to that of the PAF Pro in my RG750FA. The PafPro is good, but the Breed has that smoothness and just enough edge.

i agree. i find that the evos are harsher n the tones are kinda sharp to my ear.. the breeds on the other end, is really sweet sounding, very warm n smooth.. great for rhythm and leads.. and they sound good both clean n distorted..
