Bridge Pickup for an ash bodied guitar

Hi folks,

I just bought an Ibanez RG547AH in RBR which has an ash body.

Now I wonder which pickup to use in bridge position. (Air Norton in the neck is a must )

I want a high-power pickup, which sounds nice (on clean channel) when split but can raise hell when needed.
I like the sounds of JP and Vai

I first thought of Steve's Special but the fact that it's mid-scooped and the ash also misses mids seems to make it sound strange...

What can you recommend me???

Funny how this keeps coming up...

I also like JP's sound, and I think I have the same guitar as you. I bought mine in Japan while on vacation. I tried the Steve's Special but it sounded too harsh, whereas I love it in basswood. Currently it has an IBZ F2 in the bridge, a Virtual Vintage 2.1 in the middle position, and a DiMarzio PAF (not the PAF pro, the original) in the neck position. This gives it a very fat sound that also has a lot of highs due to the wood. Not too aggressive sounding though.

I'd like to try a real Tone Zone or a D-Sonic in the bridge position. Something else with more clarity for the neck too.

Re: Bridge Pickup for an ash bodied guitar

I did a little research in the last few hours.
I have a D-Sonic (bridge) in my 93 Sabre with the blade towards the neck and i really love it.
DiMarzio says if the blade faces the neck the sound gets a little warmer and the fact that the D-Sonic has enough mids itself sounds confident to me.

I think I'm going with the D-Sonic and the Air Norton (both reversed - like Petrucci)

other opinions? what about the evo?

What effect does the reversed AN have? I tried it both ways in my 550 but I didn't notice much difference. I suppose it would matter if coil splitting, but then its too noisy for me.

I tried my Air Norton the "right way round" and it sounded a bit brighter. Other than that there isnt much difference.

Re: Bridge Pickup for an ash bodied guitar

difference is: you have the adjustable polepieces at the inner coil, which is used in the split position so you can adjust the volume of each string in the split position
