Changing pickups often a problem?

Would it be a problem to change the pickups often. Simply swapping out Dimarzio humbuckers with different Dimarzio humbuckers. I just got my pickups swaped to a PAf Joe and a Mo Joe. I had to pay almost 100$ to get it done. I like the pickups but I'm not sure they are the set for me. I think it would be fun if I could change the pickups every now and then. Like I would have my 2 maybe 3 favorite set and every few months swap them out, so my guitar would always sound different. So I started to learn more on how I could do this from my home, instead of paying someone each time.

Any problems with doing this, I'm not saying changing them every day or every week, but maybe like once every 3-4 months?

I would have done it for $95

seriously though...there's no harm in trying different things. I'd recommend learning how to do it yourself, unless you have a lot of disposable income to spend on your tech. It's not a terribly difficult thing to do once you know how to do it.

Yes I want to learn to do it myself. I started reading on it and its not that hard. I just wanted to make sure there is no chance I could damage my guitar or the pickups by swapping in and out a few times.

The second best guitar accessory next to a metronome has got to be hand-downs a soldering iron. You'll save loads of money over time.

I learned by just doing it. It is a great idea. I can change pickups now in about 30 minutes.

Re: Changing pickups often a problem?

seems you didnt read my 'how to" in the previous post

it's really easy to do that... next time: get a soldering iron and try it by yourself. no need to be a genius to do it

as for changing the pickups I have always wondered why the wires are not "clipped" the pickups. basically: the wires would be soldered to the guitar controls on one side and clipped to the pickups on the other side.

that way you can swap pickups easily: no need to use the solder at all: just a screw driver...

I can still see one problem: some people will be willing to change the way the pickups are soldered to the controls (phase-in , phase-out etcetc...)

Demiurge: your second best friend for a guitar is not a screw driver?
(and an allen key for those who use a floyd rose)

hehehe

Re: Changing pickups often a problem?

one caveat...ibanez switches have notoriously chintzy contacts. Next time you order pickups, you may want to order a new switch or two...they're very easy to fry, esp. with an inexperienced solderer.

A switch should cost you less than $10...and an extra 10 minutes of repair time.

chaning pickups out often isn't a problem . I really wish all pickup companies would adopt the emg style quick connect setup , it makes changing out pickups sooo easy .

I'm working on something like that right now. A super quick way to try new pickups withour soldering. As soon as I can get a prototype out, I'll be sure to let ya know. ;-)

The only problem is that you can wire pickups differently - sometimes in phase, sometimes out. Or you could wire a stacked humbucker as a single, or you could coil tap a humbucker.

Make sure your modular system has jumpers!!!

Yeah get a new switch - I fried my Ibby 5 way after doing 3 pikcup swaps. So I just got a Tele 3 way and have my guitar wired up like Petrucci.
