Changing pickups on RG-570

Hi guys, i have a couple questions...

I have a GrayNickel RG570, and i want to get new pickups. I have in mind either EVOs, or AN/SS like in the Petrucci models, i cant decide...

Now the questions:

can the stock S1 get along fine with any of these?, or should i get a new single coil too? (money is kinda tight...)

is there a huge difference when pickups are directly mounted? i mean, should i have the holding-thingys removed?

Are the standard 5-way switch and pots enough? or should i get new ones too?

Any of these im having it done at a store, im sure id end up ruining my guitar otherwise...

---

Anyway, seems like a great forum guys, sorry if any of this has been asked before...

Try an Evo in the bridge and a PAF pro at the neck. The PAF pro has a smoother sound in the neck position than the Evo neck model. If you can afford it, go for a Blue Velvet in the middle. Just my .02.

To answer your second question: I'd leave the mounting rings or change them to chrome plated metal ones. The chrome would look cool with black p/ups and Gray Nickel finish. If you remove the rings and direct mount the p/ups, you'll be left with eight tiny holes in the guitar. The holes would stand out against the light color of the finish. Just another .02.

ifyou don't use the single coil very much i don't see a reason for changing it.

as for the pots and switch,if they don't make nose when you use them, they're just fine

Thanx for answering guys, I´ve been reading around the whole forum, i realized these things have been asked before... sorry....

Well, i dont use the single coil by itself (pos. 3), but i do use it with the bridge pup (pos. 2)

edit: but i could split the two H-H s like the JPM to get this type of sound.

From what ive been reading, theres something i couldnt get cleared:

If i remove the mid pickup, and just leave the hole or, say, put a H-H pickguard there, will there be a difference regarding sound? should i fill it? and what with?

With all the reading ive been doing im thinking a lot about the whole modding thing, so, ive realized that something id like to do is turn this one into a sort of JPM, but with the pickguard to cover up the holes (pup and pots).

edit: thing with the JPM is i finally got to try one out, and i loved it.... (sadly its waaaay out of my price range here and now...)

Unless you plan on refinishing the guitar, I'd leave the single coil where it is. It won't make any difference tonally.

If you want the Petrucci wiring setup, Stew-Mac (and other places I'm sure) sell a 5-position switch that will give you the following pickup combinations:

Bridge HB
Bridge SC + middle SC
Bridge SC + Neck SC
Neck SC + middle SC
Neck HB

So it's like the Petrucci wiring setup with a couple extra settings thrown in. I think that would give you the sounds you're after with minimum investment, and without irreversible mods that might make your guitar harder to sell in the future should you choose to do so.

I used the same pup set-up you guyz are talking about...
  • Neck HB=Paf Pro
  • Middle=stock single coil
  • Bridge HB=Evo
Installed in a Fender Stagemaster. I had to flip the Paf Pro to get the
Neck's rear coil and and SC to work properly...just the opposite of
Kuma's set-up. I tried to wire it w/o flipping it first, but the Neck HB was
out-of-phase after the wiring connections were made(unless u like that funky sound).

Results: Neck pickup is clean and still distorts at a low volume even when
the SC is kicked in with it. Evo just plainly kicks Booty!
If you want to get a cleaner sound at the neck you will have to get
the Evo Neck HB and I believe Dimarzio make a special SC that reacts with the Evo Neck pickup....you may want to email them about that
to double-check me.

Well, the guitar is in the shop, i should have it back by the weekend

Air Norton / Steve´s Special combo, i tried a Steves in the shop in an RG and i liked it, that was the last proof i needed

Ive read here in the forums the whole "F-Spacing" thing is pretty much non-important, but still i gotta ask: only pups left there, and they aint getting more, the AN was F spaced, the SS was not, i got a nice price on them, so i got them anyway.... (hope its allright!)

Im in Argentina, so right now getting ANYTHING is quite expensive/complicated... (i clear that up, cause of the availability factor.....)
