Coil split with HSH???
Well I'm thinking in a mod for my RG1570 (HSH) using a DPDT switch or a push/pull pot just like a JS. I've been searching for wiring diagrams and found this:
Using the standar 5way switch, Basically I want this configuration:
(using coil split)
1 Bridge (1 coil)
2 Bridge (1 coil) + Middle
3 Middle
4 Neck (1 coil) + Middle
5 Neck (1 coil)
wich is like a Strat S-S-S configuration
(without coil split)
1 Bridge
2 Bridge tap + Middle
3 Middle
4 Neck tap + Middle
5 Neck

The stock ibanez configuration
So my question is:
Is it possible?
would it work?
Maybe I'm missing something... Feels like is too nice to be true..

Re: Coil split with HSH???
This is actually an easy one. I'm not sure what pickups you have in your guitar, if they're stock, they probably have only three wires rather than four (not counting the bare ground, by the way). If that's the case, one of the wires essentially takes the place of the North-Finish/South-Finish combination in your first picture. See the following:
I've highlighted the wires in question in yellow, though yours are probably white. You should refer to where they attach to the switch to figure out what's what. Anyway, you'll be moving these wires to your push-pull switch, then running new wires from the switch back to where the originals used to be on the 5-way, as below:
Here, the new wires are purple. In addition, there is a black wire running from both of the third terminals on the push-pull to your common ground. So, in effect, all the push-pull is doing is sending your coil tap wires to ground when pulled up, and when it's pushed down, it sends them over to the 5-way switch, where it decides as it does in the stock config. Note that in positions 2 and 4, the push-pull switch does nothing at all, one coil of each humbucker will be shorted either way.
Sorry for the absurdly large pictures, but I though retaining clarity was worth it.

Re: Coil split with HSH???
So it works!!
Thank you very much djohns74.
I forgot to tell I have a Breed bridge and a PAF Pro in the neck. Anyway your diagram is pretty clear, the black&white takes the place of the yellow wire of your picture.
I'm thinking in another option of using parerel humbuckers instead of coil tap... but for this configuration I would need more than one swich or a different switch (4PDT?)
What do you think is more useful? Coil split or Pararell Humbucking?

I actually find parallel humbuckers to be much more useful than coil splits personally. Generally, I don't find that one coil of a humbucker sounds anything like a good single-coil Strat pickup, for example. Also, the drop-off in volume is usually too great, and the hum is always annoying.
It is a little more complicated in that you need a push-pull pot for each humbucker that you want to switch, but I don't generally have a use for either splitting or parallel-switching a bridge pickup, so I'd just stick with one switch for the neck anyway, but that's just me. Then again, my preferred setup is a two humbucker guitar with the Ibanez 2502N (or whatever it's called) 5-way switch, which allows the neck pickup to be series or parallel without any additional switches. Of course, in your case, that would also render the middle single coil useless, but I've done that too, where the single coil is there but not used. Just not a fan of 'em generally.

Re: Coil split with HSH???
Hi, I know this thread is very old but this diagram was very useful to me and I was wondering: is it possible to do the same but using the outer (adjustable) coils? how?
Thanks!

Re: Coil split with HSH???
lol..... Necropost!!!!!!! Jk evil..... I've brought back FAR older posts than this before.
Yes, you can absolutely do what you want, and your going to laugh at how easy it is......
1. unscrew your pickups and turn them 180 degrees
2. screw them back in........... done.
This works perfectly as long as your not using DiMarzios with "air" technology.
The wiring diagram above will work perfectly for you

Re: Coil split with HSH???
Sorry to revive the dead thread again, but I'm trying to do a similar configuration on an Ibanez of mine, and I can't seem to find ANYONE who has ever done it.
I have a HSH with 1 volume and 1 tone and a 5 way. I want to have it when the coils are untapped to only be the humbuckers, as in:
1> Neck
2> Neck+Bridge
3> Neck+Bridge
4> Neck+Bridge
5> Bridge
And then when I tap the coils, the middle single coil comes on and I get:
1> Neck
2> Neck+Middle
3> Neck+Middle+Bridge
4> Middle+Bridge
5> Bridge
I've seen where this has been done by adding a separate 4pdt switch, but space is already tight and I'd rather not have to drill any more holes and add even more wiring. So I'm wondering if this can be done with just a push/pull volume pot?
Thanks,
Nick

Doubt one is enough. Maybe 2 on volume and tone. What model Ibanez is it ?

Re: Coil split with HSH???
Thanks, I think it's a Gio grx20, it says gio on the top of the headstock, but there is no serial our model number. I got it for free, the single coil is wired in so it is always on and there is only a 3 way switch. So i'm pretty sure it didn't come in there.
I had figured I would need more than 1 push/pull, but wanted to see if anyone knew of a way.

Re: Coil split with HSH???
I think you'll need a super switch, like the VLX91 switch

Re: Coil split with HSH???
In my strat, I just put two extra ON-OFF-ON switch one for each HB so I can individually do front split, HB and real split on each of the HB. I just use the normal strat 5 way switch. I like it this way because I can get nice single coil sound from the HBs. Also, the sound in #2 and #4 is very different if you use the front or back split or even the HB. You can get a lot more sound this way.
I actually do three individual volume and no tone. You further make it more dynamic in #2 and #4 but balancing the volume of the pups. I don't need the tone because if I need darker sound, just put into HB and lower the volume.
the resulting wiring is very very simple, I even double up all three switches to increase reliability ( wire both half of all three switches in parallel so even one side fail, the other side will take up the slack.).
