Compare Dimarzio D Sonic turned both ways.

I hear with the bar toward the bridge, the sound is tighter and brighter. How is the bass and mids that way?

Basically, the mids are more accented up top with the bar toward the bridge. The bass it tighter overall. Listen to Petrucci's tone on Systematic Chaos for a good example.

So you get more high mid action? And tighter bass? Thats cool. Most vids or clips, people keep it with the bar toward the neck. Is that just better for soloing or something?

Actually Petrucci uses it with the bar to the neck... which is way too middy and muddy for me...

I had it with the bar towards the bridge and its tighter, more defined, more "steve's special" sounding but not as bright... just perfect

No, not a mid-scoop. I do love my scooped Pups, though (Steve's Special).

I like a good mix of high/low mids, with more high. Hows the crunch compare both ways?

Re: Compare Dimarzio D Sonic turned both ways.

still shopping for a good pickup?

My D-sonic's installed on my RG550 with the bar facing the bridge... it sounds very balanced though bassy [then again, it's tuned to C standard]. It's definitely dynamic and well articulate; not quite over the top "gain" like an X2N or an Evo but just enough to get it crunchy with the amp's gain at 5 - 6.
... so let's say you grab a blade coil of an X2N and grab the warm bass coil of a Tone Zone and turn that into a pup with the same power as a Steve's Special... i think that's what a D-sonic sounds like
you want crunch? 'tube Katatonia... i know they're heavier than crunch but their last album explores the D-sonic's dirty/cleans with the bar towards the bridge...

Yep, still looking. I guess I need to look outside of Dimarzio and Duncan. I've tried most of them, and only really liked the EVO. But that pup sounds too thin in my Strat.

Can some of these examples apply to all humbuckers? Example, I have a Steve's Special in my Roadstar II, and it sounds completely different than that same pickup in my RGA121. Yes, the body woods are different, but I don't think it could possibly be that much different. In the RGA, it sounds more like a traditional humbucker, in the Roadstar it sounds very boomy, lots of bass with less highs.

Re: Compare Dimarzio D Sonic turned both ways.

greetings all..new here. just a quick question, would reversing the d-sonic require wiring change as well? i know in the ebmm jp u need to reverse the wiring too to get the 'petrucci's middle' sound, but i'm using it in another guitar & only in HB mode.

anyone?

Re: Compare Dimarzio D Sonic turned both ways.

With the bar towards the bridge:

Much tighter, crunchier (seems to distort more) and bassier when playing riffs or heavy powerchords. The low E string sounds a bit louder than the others. Still works fine for solos, but some might find it bright. I'm not keeping my D Sonic this way, but it's much better for those into very high-gain and exclusively rhythm guitar.

Bar towards the neck:

Great for solos, very round. Powerchords sound smooth. Not as crunchy as with the bar towards the bridge, but still very crunchy. A bit bright as well, with lots of mid-highs, and that's what makes them "vocal" sounding as described by DiMarzio and good for leads. The high E and B strings sound louder than normally (like they're boosted by the pickup). When it comes to output, the D Sonic clearly has slightly more output on one side. In this case, it gives the idea that you're running a very subtle boost that works only when you hit the high E, B, or G.
