D sonic

I'm currently using Evo2 on my jem(Yes I've restored em and will post pics later) I am actually very very happy with the Evo2 but having listen to a lot of dreamtheater, I've always liked petrucci's tone. What do you guys think of the D sonic, I'm playing in a progressive band in D tuning and although I didn't shred a lot when I was playing for the band now I just freaking shred a lot and I've wanted to try new pickups, and my jem is 77bfp with basswood and evo neck. And I don't want to change the Evo neck

Re: D sonic

Your low end will come to life with the D-Sonic. It's a tad noisy since it's hot but I don't mind that at all. It's a pickup you either love or hate. I happen to love it. Some have mentioned the magnetic pull taking away from the sustain but I haven't noticed that with mine. Mine is the 7-string version, not sure if the six version is any different but what the heck.....Might as well try it out right?

Re: D sonic

I've been looking for a D-Sonic for a while too, but until I find one I'm quite happy with my Tone Zone. And the Air Norton sounds a helluva lot better than the Evo neck in my RG's basswood body.

Re: D sonic

if the Evo2 is similar to an Evo in terms of EQ, the D-Sonic will definitely bring up the bass just a notch but might lose the scream and wails of an Evo/Evo2. With the maple board on the BFP, it should be a lethal pickup though...

Yeah man. That's what I'm afraid most, I just love the scream of the Evo2, I use it most of the time. Rarely will I go neck pickup, I in fact even wants to play with just the bridge pickup, no neck and no middle on my jem, but I lazy re do the whole guitar to close up the neck and middle pickup hole.

Re: D sonic

I really like the D-Sonic. It adds some growl to the low end.

There is however some backnoise. I have to get away from the amp when playing. WIth the Evos I never had this problem.

All in all I think its a great pickup, but it's all about what you want.

Is the noise visible when playing near the amp or in front of the amp, playing gigs here in malaysia, you need to live with one thing, small stage. But why does the D sonic have backnoise, I've always thought all dimarzios are quiet. My evos are definitely quiet, I didn't even use noisegate with it as I needed with duncans.

The noise is active if I am within around 1 to 2 feet of the amp.
It is not overly loud. You should go try one out before you buy one.
The reason I had one installed is because I own multiple guitars and I wanted to try something new.

If you only have one or two guitars the stick with the EVOs. I have installed EVO's in all of my guitars except the one with the D-Sonic.

Thanks man for the reply, 1 or 2 feet shouldn't be a problem though, stage here is small but not that small LOL Anyway the policy of trying pickup here is not available, the stores here didn't keep any pickups, if you want, you order and buy it, no returning if not satisfied. And I have yet to meet a player here who's using D sonic if not I would have test it. And I'm the only one in this island who's using evo2 LOL. All here are duncan people.

Re: D sonic

I've tried Duncans, and they are good pickups.
But I really think that EVO is the best. I have also installed EVO 2's and they are great also.

Just a question though, what do you think of evo bridge versus evo2? I've tried evo bridge before, I owned a 7v but sold it off, but that was years ago, how do you think the two stack up against each other.

Re: D sonic

I really love the EVO 1. The sustain is great, but I really love the tone of it.
The warm tone is what really sold me on the EVO's.
I have it in a ESP Kamakazi and it sounds great in the all maple body.

I did not care for the SD Screamin Demon, there was too much on the low end and I had to tweek my bass to get a consistent sound.

It's a matter of taste actually, tried it, bar towards the bridge more sharper and bar to the neck is rounder.
