I use two
DiMarzio Fast Track 1s. They are humbuckers built to sound like a single coil with more power (the hot rails isn't really suppoesd to sound like a single, but it does sound good). I think he's trying to say that hum-canceling singles (or humbuckers voiced like singles) aren't authentic to a single coils tone. Many people say this.
Seriously, your roomate may have the opinion that they are crap, many people feel that way and they are entitled to, but when ever I use my FT1s in a SRV or Hendrix style section no one has ever said it sounded 'crappy" or "fake" or anything negative. Actually, all my guitar buddies are impressed, and we aren't talking about amatuers either.
One of them just spent $600 on upgrading his strat with the best "true singles" he could buy. Even he had to admit my Fast Tracks sound good. Maybe not exact, but in a live context or to non guitar nerdy people, not obsessed with guitar tone (so let's just say normal music lovers) it's as authentic as it needs to be. These are guys with experience and great gear. Most reasonable people will tell you that it all comes down to what you want and what gear works for you.
Also, I have D-Sonic and I don't care if it's a wax potted magnet and a fart. It sounds good,
really good. Everytime I turn on my amp I smile.
So it's his opinon and he can have it. The trouble with people
that opinionated is they can't just let you have your own without arguing with you all the time.
