I decided to mod one of my Carvin Bolts recently and put a DiMarzio Cruiser in the neck for hum-free single-coil sounds. The other two pickups are a RW/RP AP11 in the middle and a C22B in the bridge. A basic H/S/H setup with a coil-split switch.
I am really pleased with this combo. The Crusier neck really does the job. It gives you a pretty authentic single-coil sound without the hum and is dead quiet. It sounds much more like a single-coil than a Carvin TBH-60 which is more PAF-ish. The split sound is pretty nice with the AP11--on the bright side since the Cruiser is not a high output model. Turning the split off gives you a stronger and more full ranged "4" sound albeit with a bit more hum. The AP11 alone gives you a different clean sound and the "2" sound with
the AP11/C22B gives you wonderful "quack".
The biggest surprise was with high-gain sounds. The Cruiser is wonderful for high gain (I have it set up very close to the strings). It is dead quiet with low-string pull and a great, flutey sound. Not as good as a full-sized bucker, but very close. It is surprisingly loud for a pickup with a 3.13K DC resistance and a 140 mv output rating. I understand that
Andy Timmons uses a pair of these in his sig guitar. Highly recommended!
