Dimarzio New 7 vs. Blaze?

How do the Dimarzio New 7 pickups compare to the Blaze pickups? I'm looking for more articulation for faster playing, especially stuff like slayer-esque rhythms.

I have a Universe and a 7620, both of which have Evo7s in them now. But... before I changed the pickups I compared them constantly.

In my opinion the New 7s are actually more articulate than the Blazes (probably due to their slightly higher output). The New 7s weren't exactly muddy... but they sounded kinda thick, but rigid. Like a sweatshirt wrapped around a 2x4.

The Blazes weren't quite muddy either... they simply had a looser sound than the New 7s and the Evos I have now. More like a sweatshirt around a slinky. I know thats probably not the best way to describe their sound, but thats the image I get when I think of how the pickups felt. (see the sound of the touch...)

The Evos are significantly more articulate than both of them. But they are pretty darn bright, well suited to solos, but less bass than might be ideal for metal. But I also have a low-mid/bassy amp, so it works great.

Hope that helped

Ok, thanks for the tips. The thing is, before I stumbled upon these forums, I was reading reviews elsewhere of the pickups as opposed to the 7620 stock pickup, and everybody was saying that the blaze was great for making the low B less muddy and more articulate, and I already ordered it. I guess if I don't like it I'll call dimarzio and see about exchanging... but the problem is that I bought it off ebay, so I don't know if they'd do that in that case. Do you know anything about exchanging pickups with dimarzio?

PS: I have the new 7, and it really is too muddy for my taste. I've been playing my friend's ESP with EMG 707's until I get the blaze in the mail, and I like the 707 sound loads better for fast rhythms, but I think it's too dry-sounding for leads, where I like the new 7 better.

Well, i've heard Evo's described as about as close to the sound of an EMG you can get in a passive pickup...

Dimarzio won't exchange used pickups, but they have a 30-day return policy on new ones. If you bouhgt it from a dealer using e-bay to sell this shouldn't be a problem, but if it's secondhand, then you're stuck with them.

There's also been a bit of speculation that the blaze's on the newer uni's aren't REALLY blazes anymore, as demonstrated by the black polepeices and brass backings- they look more like new-7's and all other "dimarzio-made" pickups than actual dimarzios. I don't know if this has ever been proved one way or another though, so for the time being that's pure speculation.

Well, do a new 7 and blaze at least sound DIFFERENT from eachother? I'm hoping I get at least something out of this.

I got the blaze bridge installed.. still too muddy, but an improvement from the New 7. I'm pretty sure the New 7 is made by Dimarzio, it has "dimarzio" engraved in the back of the pickup. Anyhow, bass is not a problem, I'm finding the Blaze pretty darned bassy. I guess it will get re-ebayed, and I'm either gonna give a TZ 7 a try or an Evo. Which of those really accents fast picking and the actual picking sound, where there's a little punch associated with the actual stroke of the string? For instance, I think the guitar tone for the Metallica song Battery is totally rad. That's basically what I'm looking for in a 7-string pickup.

I'll second the Blaze Custom recommendation - I use it in both UV7BK and RG7-620, and it's got a great mid-range spike that puts a lot of gain and definition into the mix, plus it about 20 millivolts higher in output...
