DiMarzio Super 2?

Has anyone tried one of these as a neck pickup? Only 8K DC resistance but 425mv! Looks to be pretty bright as well. Quite a flamethrower...

Re: DiMarzio Super 2?

I haven't tried this, but I have the Dimarzio New 7 neck in one of my guitars, which is supposed to be somewhat similar. It may not be as bright, but it definitely is high output. I personally don't like high output neck humbuckers, since they tend to mud up unless they're very bright. The New 7 neck is not too muddy with the volume knob up all the way, but it's definitely too gainy for my tastes. Turning the volume knob down increases the clarity but tends to make it sound thin, at least to my ears. It's a matter of taste, but I much prefer something like an Air Norton, which is lower output so it has clarity, and due to the EQ curve it still packs a nice punch. There are some people who love very high output neck humbuckers, though. There's one guy on sevenstring.org who swears by an X2N in the neck.

I like it. I have one. It's basically the Super D structure, with a large ceramic magnet, but underwound. The output comes from the ceramic magnet. They are icy, crisp, and compressed. They are good for funk, they coil tap like a real bright, crisp modern single coil, and generally I like it in 24 fret guitars, but not so much in 22 fret guitars.

I know Jerry Garcia used them in split mode. They probably would sound good in parallel as well.

Re: DiMarzio Super 2?

i have one in my 21 fret telecaster, it is not bright, it doesnt clean up that well either, its rather dark, BUT it sounds awesome for distortion heavy rhythm, i have a GFS vin 59 in the bridge and for a 35 dollar pickup...

so id say its an acquired taste, im gonna give it a little more time but its a cool dark distorted neck pickup in a fender style guitar

oh also im running straight to the volume, no tone pots
