DiMarzio X2N + Air Norton

I plan on replacing the pickups on my RG550. I really want a high output bridge pickup and a nice, round, classic-shred type sound from the neck pickup. Would the X2N + Air Norton Combo work well?

Also, for the single coil spot, would a Virtual Vintage work well with the other pickups? (Reason being, I have a couple lying around).

Keep in mind, this WILL be my shred/metal guitar. My jazz and classic rock tones are achived through my other guitars.

Thanks,
Wade

Re: DiMarzio X2N + Air Norton

I think the X2N+Air Norton combo will work out great. I don't know much about the virtual vintage pickup, so I can't comment on how it would go with those other two. I know that a Blue Velvet is the pickup of choice if you're sticking with your stock 5 way switch. Of course, if you feel like replacing the switch with a Dimarzio multi-pole, you could opt for one of their hum-cancelling pickups like the Chopper and wire yourself a 3 humbucker guitar. Now that would just scream metal.

you could think about hot rails.

that way you could have tight cutting power (x2n) fat and warm power (hot rails) and singing clarity (air norton).

I like the FS-1 a lot for single coil.

Re: DiMarzio X2N + Air Norton

for shredding outright metal:
neck: super 2
mid: fast track 1
bridge: x2n

now metal and versatile:
neck: fred
mid: virtual vintage 2.2 or blues
bridge: super 3

this is for basswood of course.

HELL YEAH.

Or an Evo neck. For added BITE.

Don't worry about balancing the pups, I've balanced (volume wise) a Humbucker from Hell with an X2N before.... Heh. But ideally, the Super 2 or Evo neck or even a Tonezone, in neck, would balance well with the X2N.
