I know you guys on this forum are Dimarzio experts, so I thought I'd ask your opinion. I play in a power pop band - kind of like Weezer but with more metal-legato-style guitar solos. We've been recording and I've been using my trusty 1994 Ibanez 540S with
maple fretboard and QM pickups. I know a lot of people don't like IBZ pickups, but I think the QMs sound great with the Sabre's mahogony body. Anyway, I just picked up an EBMM Luke and was really looking forward to using it, but I've been finding that it just doesn't cut through the mix at all. We layer a lot of guitars, and when I try to solo, I can barely hear the Luke. It's got an alder body, with
rosewood fretboard and an EMG set - 85 in the bridge and SLV singles. I checked on Harmony Central and a couple other people had similar problems hearing the Luke in a band situation. I've always preferred maple fretboards in the past - my IBZ 540S, and I've got a Performance Guitars VH-style superstrat with a SD JB in the bridge - I find that the brightness of maple really stands out in the mix. So I was thinking of switching out the Luke's pickups and maybe putting in some Dimarzios. Does anyone have any suggestions for a HSS combo that might work well with the Luke?
