EMG 89/85 wiring with push-pull volume pot

Hi all,

I found a good deal on an EMG 89 and an EMG 85 ($90) which I plan to put in neck/bridge respectively.

The EMG 89 is designed to work with a push/pull tone pot.

I am going to install them in my new 540P-II. However, it does NOT have a tone knob, and I don't want one either!

Does anyone have some wirering suggestions for this? I have an idea that it shouldn't be that hard.

Thanks in advance.

Re: EMG 89/85 wiring with push-pull volume pot

Wire the push-pull as your master volume and use the included tone pot as a fishing lure!

With your 89, the two pots it comes with will be wired together with a green capacitor and a piece of black wire. Unsolder both of those from the push-pull pot.

At this point, the only wires that will be connected to the push-pull will be a thin silver wire (ground) that grounds lug 3 to the case of the switch portion and another with a clear sleeve over it (output) that connects lug 2 to one of the common poles of the switch. Leave (ground) where it is and completely remove (output) from the pot. Put a new wire where you just disconnected (output) from on the switch and run it to the neck-position pole on your pickup selector.

After that, everything is the same as a standard wiring setup: Connect your ground to lug 3 on the pot, your main out from the pickup selector switch to lug 2, and connect the white wire from the output jack to lug 1.

I hope that's clear enough; I have a tendency to ramble a bit. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need clarification.

Thanks for that, marky, I'll see if I can make some sense of that when the pickups actually arrive. I might send you a PM, thanks for offering me that

Jacob.

http://www.geocities.jp/dgb_studio/EMG_89_e.htm

Get a 5 way 4 plate switch (the dimarzio super switch) and you'll be able to wire it up in a multitude of ways.

I've used that webpage to wire up a friends guitar with an 81/89 combo in it, if I am correct it has:

B / B + N (S) / B + N / N (S) / N

so 5 positions, 5 wirings, no push pull required.

I can't quite remember which one it is, as it wasn't for my guitar!

But yeah, it's very usefull, and means you can use a 5 way, as otherwise you are stuck with using both a push pull and a 3 way which is a bit retarded.

Anyway, I'd just pick one you like the look of and wire it!

Glad to have been of help

Heh, I'll do that

Just out of interest, got any schematics for the simplest possible wiring for a single EMG pickup without any controls, straight to the output jack? Is it just the pickup in serial with the battery?

Re: EMG 89/85 wiring with push-pull volume pot

Kind of, the battery goes to the pickup with the output jack acting as a way to stop battery power (ie, no jack, no circuit, no battery draining).

For the rest, you just have an earth wire to the pickup and the live. it is simple, but always on just sounds like a recipe for disaster unless you have a volume pedal
