EMG's and Evo's?

So, I played a buddy's 707-equipped guitar the other night. My first time playing EMG's, and while I've always been a low-to-mid output sort of guy, I was surprised to find I liked the basic EQ curve a lot more than I thought I would. They had a slightly scooped lower midrange and better attack than the Blazes in my UV, which by comparison seem lower-mid heavy.

I'm (obviously) not about to route the thing up for EMG's, especially as they don't currently offer a sinclecoil seven string pickup, but I've heard a lot of speculation that the Evo bridge pickup is voiced a lot like a passive EMG. How much truth is there in this?

Also, what else is there out there for passive pickups with slightly scooped lower mids and good treble presence? Output isn't really an issue, as again I'm a strat guy from way back, I play fairly low gain anyway, compared to many of you, and anyway my Mesa Nomad has MORE than enough gain for anything I could run into it. I could probably shred up a storm on a lipstick pickup equipped guitar if I just maxed out the gain on that thing.

And, as I've been kinda gassing for a Schecter Hellraiser for a bit anyway, are there any downsides to going active that I should be aware of?

Try some APC pickups first, before you go the battery route. No disrespect to EMGs.

Re: EMG's and Evo's?

From someone who owns guitars equipped with EMGs and Evos, I must say, they are nothing alike, other than "high output". The EMGs beat the utter pants off the Evos, in my view, but seeing as how I don't want to go to the trouble to route my 7, the evos stay. I'll have to be content with one EMG equipped guitar.

Re: EMG's and Evo's?

Personally I prefer Evo's.

EMG's are very good, as good as any other high end pu.

Preference much?

I would usually prefer regular passives over EMGs, but in this case I prefer EMGs over Evos.

On Jemsite? Someone preferring Evo's to everything else? No....

Hmm. So much for that idea. Can anyone get into exactly how they differ tonally? A/B clips would be absolutely awesome, too.

Re: EMG's and Evo's?

Hmm since i loved my old 81´s i must say:
using EMG is like mixing drinks with Coca Cola and using EVO´s just like using Orange Juice....a matter of taste for syntetic or Biologic ingredience :P
