Question

Evo 2 Pick-Ups

Hi Folks,

Anyone use or tried Evo 2 pickup?

Was wondering what they are like, are they much different to the original Evolution? I'm putting together a project and looking for a more modern Vai sound. Was thinking along the lines of Evo2(B) - HS2(S) - Breed(N) in basswood body. My amp is a Carvin Legacy.

Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am putting one into the bridge of a custom I am finishing.

When I get them I will post a review.

Excellent.
I have some interest in the Evo 2.

Have an Evolution now: great pickup overall, but just a bit too...cold?

Tried a PAF Pro for a while. Nice pickup, with two minor gripes: There was a midrange spike that I sometimes found irritating in certain chords, and, the low-end was a bit mushy and undefined.

Now trying out a Fred bridge (installed last night), and it seems sweet!
Tighter than the PAF Pro, a bit more complex, somewhat modern sounding but... slightly compressed, yet loose enough to have a mildly vintage sound. Excellent definition. It seems to have corrected the deficiencies of the PAF Pro.

It is a very toneful and expressive pickup. It makes me sound good!
It works remarkably well for a fairly wide variety of music--Dream Theater, Yngwie, Rush...even some AC/DC with a little tweaking.

Re: Evo 2 Pick-Ups

Ok folks, I gather the Evo2 is similar to the original Evo, but maybe not so hot, maybe a bit smoother and more articulate since it has less power. I'm gonna get me one!

Any comments then on what may be a good neck pup to match. DiMarzio says the original Evo in neck is "prefectly balanced". Any thoughts on this, I was tending more towards Breed or PAF Pro in the neck pos. Thanks.

Well my pickups arrived at the shop yesterday. About a month early.

All I have to do now is get the finish done, and then we are underway.
