Evo bridge + Air Norton neck = WOW!!!

Just swopped my steve's special outta my mahogany bodied rg2820 with an evo and i am really pleased at the results...

the guitar i got second hand wif a SS/AN combo and i love the AN... full, warm and not at all muddy... fluid sounds even after gain...
However, I could not get my ears to like the SS in the bridge... i am not saying this pickup is bad but i guess its down to personal preferences and like a more midrangy, wah like sound as compared to the scooped tones offered by the SS... I was a big fan of the tone zone but it can be muddy at times and hence decided to try out the evo this time....

after installation, i plugged it into my amp and WOW!!!...this pickup has the nicest harmonic overtones i must say... low notes seem to growl and have a nice wah like quality... the best part is the tightness of the notes and all high notes seem to cut thru the gain very cleanly... makes shredding seem easier man....lol...no runny, muddy notes.... in short, I believe i am gonna play this evo equipped ibanez more often then my other mahogany, tonezone equipped ibanez... EVOs rock!!!

isn't that a great feeling finding a perfect pup match to your ears? i have a '59 and a JB (seymour) in a mahogany guitar and the tones are so awesomely "organic". i plan to put that same combo in another custom mahogany Jem sometime soon. i put an evolution in my alder bodied strat and it is a perfect match.
i'm now trying to find a good pup for basswood guitars.

It's wierd, but the '59 and JB sound SO GOOD in mahogany, it's not even funny.

those pups (JB - '59) are my new fav combo for mahogany! the Schecter Blackjack series has them stock. the ESP EC-1000 also has them available. i think that says something about that combo of pups in mahogany - again, i haven't found a match like this for basswood.

i'll have to look into an EVO + Norton combo for one of my basswood guitars. everything else i use sounds flat and thin sounding in my Ibanez guitars.

Gotta agree- not a huge mahogany fan, but the Evo7 i swapped into my 2027's bridge in place of the TZ i received it with sounded absolutely fantastic.

My next guitar is probably going to be an alder 7-string, but after that I'd be sort of tempted to spring for a mahogany 7, with an evo bridge and maybe a Blaze neck- it's supposed to sound pretty close to an Evo 6 neck, and that's another pickup that's supposed to work well in mahogany...

I have been hearing good things about those Air Nortons in RGs. Its got me wanting to pickup an RG to hot rod up a bit.

Exactly. Never heard the JB in the neck, but who knows? Maybe someone likes it.

I'm sure someone does. I mean, I have the Tone Zone in the neck of my RG with an Evo in the bridge and I think it's one of the best sounding neck pups ever because I like dark neck pups. To each his own. But I must say, I love the Evo in basswood...not so much in mahogany because of all the mids. I bet it smokes in alder...*drool*

Re: Evo bridge + Air Norton neck = WOW!!!

I concur - I use the same combo in a mahogany bodied/maple capped RG8570 and it's a really great setup. I've taken to backing the AN away from the strings a tad though, which seems to open it up even further. I'd be extremely tempted to check out an Evo 2 though...

Re: Evo bridge + Air Norton neck = WOW!!!

Without doubt, both pickups sound great.

But isn't the contrast too big ?

When I switch pickups, I want a bit extra, etc. BUT I do like a sound that is somewhere close, to make it sound more lke " one guitar "...

How do feel the two "blend"?

( sorry about all the " " " "'s, but that's just describing sound, so difficult ! )
