Evo? No thanks..

I have an Air Norton and an Evo in my Mahog bodyid S Ibanez. I like the Air Norton its nice and warm. But I can not stand that Evolution and will be replacing it as soon as i find a suitable replacment.

So, what picks sound good in Mahogony (bridge). I play metal, rock, shred and others, the Evo is to damn bright, I cant get a heavy crunch sound out of it. Help?

Re: Evo? No thanks..

The Breed seems to be all things to all people... It's versatile enough for everything except the serious mid scooped thing. If I'm not mistaken the Andy Timmons model is, or is very similiar to an S series. Dimarzio claims the closest thing they have to offer from the shelf to compare its bridge pickup to is The Breed bridge model, "very similiar" to quote them. Now Timmons to me seems to have the most versatile sound of just about anyone. Of course that's IF he uses his sig model on most of his stuff.

Frank Gambale had the Double Whammy in his sig S models, that too I believe was compared to The Breed. His sound isn't what you're after though.

Anyway, Breeds cover all bases and let you actually hear the natural sound of your guitar through them. My only complaint was that sometimes they sound too "friendly".

Then again, I've heard some cuts of a Steves Special in an S that sounded pretty amazing, different vibe altogether though.

Sorry, not much help

Mike

Steve's Special, or (even slightly better) D-Sonic. Both have lots of clarity and presence, and not as bright as the Evo. The D-Sonic has the added benefit of being a bit warmer/fatter than the SS. Both seem to like mahogany/drop tuning/thick strings etc., although they work well in other situations, too.

Some would say a Breed is a better Duncan JB, good for everything. I agree, Dimarzios have always sounded better to me.

Re: Evo? No thanks..

I have used Breed neck, Breed bridge, Humbucker From Hell (neck), X2N (bridge) and now, I'm onto, Tonezone neck and bridge.

For clips ont he Breed, you can go to my website...
http://music.download.com/Shredcows

Everything is done with Breeds except X2N showcase.

I like the Breeds, versatile and powerful... it even has good cleans. However, like what TheToneZone said, it's a friendly dude... just sounds good and nice and all that... nothing very special about it IMO.

The X2N sounds... well... crushing. But if you want dynamics, its not the best at that. It does have a ncie split tone though, good for funk!

Right now, Tonezone in bridge is nice for me. I love the awwww it has, due to the boosted mids. I love the bass... the S has a good tight low end, but it isn't very deep sounding IMO, so I like the TZ's bassy-ness and how it thickens up the tone nicely.

If you need clips on the TZ, just pm me. I'll do one.

Have any of you tried the H4 passive from EMG?

And, would you rather go with the Super Distortion over the H4?

I'd recommend a DiMarzio Fred.
They sound great and work wonderfully for metal...
Tone Zones are good too, but they are so dark sounding anyways, you'd almost need a bright amp to equal them out right...but some guitars sound amazing with Tone Zones...

Then again, I'm an EMG guy, so who am I to say...

Re: Evo? No thanks..

for dimarzios the Steve's Special and Tone Zone have always been popular choices. mahogany does make pickups sound a little dark but you still can get some great characteristics and dynamics. i'm going to try the Steve's Specail and Air Norton in my RGA121. i'll post feedback when i get them installed. the QM pups in my S520sol sound fair enough but i might go with something else down the road. right now i would rather upgrade the RGA and my custom Jem first.

in a mahogany guitar, I always recommend starting with a Seymour Duncan JB. There's something magical about the JB in a mahogany guitar. Awesome sounding pickups.

Re: Evo? No thanks..

i've been noticing my Evo's in my VBK and 7VWH don't get the best clean tones probably due to such a high output. they mudd out and loose definition. i tried rolling back the volume and it really didn't get better. i haven't heard an Evo in mahogany but i'm sure someone here has that set-up that could comment further.
i love the JB/'59 combo for mahogany.
let us know what you end up getting.
