Re: evo2 and air norton or evo2 and paf pro?

Well, the Air Norton will give you a very thick, warm tone, with some interesting harmonics. Petrucci's been using the Air Norton in the neck since the early/mid 90s, before that he used a Humbucker from Hell. Now he uses a custom modified version of the Air Norton that's only available on the market in his signiature Ernie Ball Music Man.

The PAF Pro is a very expressive pickup; it has a very nice voweled "aww" quality to it. It can sing, weep, cry, or burn when you need it to. It's my personal favorite neck humbucker.

JP Tone=Air Norton (WARM, FAT)
Steve Vai tone=Evolution (fatter, warmer, punchier than PAF Pro, more harmonics) or PAF Pro (Expressive)

Re: evo2 and air norton or evo2 and paf pro?

I have Evo2/HS-2/PAF Pro on my RG. I simply love it!!!

First of all, forget all craps like "JP tone", the "SV tone", the "JS tone"...
Remember: YOU WILL NOT SOUND LIKE JP, SV OR JS EVEN IF YOU PLAY HIS ENTIRE RIG!!!

I have the Air Norton/Tone Zone in my J-Custom. The Air Norton is warmer/fatter than the PAF Pro, which has a bit more harmonic overtones.

If you want your neck tone to be a bit "treblier" (cuts better through mix and heavy processing), go with the PAF Pro.
If you want it a bit fatter, go with the Air Norton.
Also, I find the PAF Pro to be more dynamic and articulate then the Air Norton.

Personally, I'd have a hard time chosing between both... You'll have great tone with either choice!
However, I went first for the PAF Pro and then only for the Air Norton. I guess PAF Pro can be more versatile.

I believe Petrucci's best tone was on SFAM, at which time I believe he was using an Air Norton and a Steve Special combo. I had it in my RG and i can tell ya it was fantastic. I also have an Evo 2 in the bridge of one of my custom guitars that I like a lot.

Re: evo2 and air norton or evo2 and paf pro?

i dont want the exact tone of JP or SV but to model mine after theirs. the tone starts at your finger tips so i know even if i play on their rig it would song like them but i want something that so emgish. i had emgs in my guitar and it sounded like crap. but im leaning toward the paf pro. the guitar is made out of bassword and paf pro sound pretty good in them. anyways thanks for your into everyone.

I don't think you'll be dissapointed in the PAF pro. I have that combination in my latest RG1570... and LOVE IT! I'm a huge fan of the JB/Jazz combo from SD, but I think I'm starting to like the Evo2/PAF pro better. Post back and let us know what you end up installing, and how you like it.
